You don't harass anyone? are you fucking kidding me? The quote above is a totally different issue, totally different OP, common denominator...third gen and you. Should I start quoting your other harassing remarks to other third generation members in different threads?

I'll tell you what @Mush Mouse . Maybe I'm in the wrong. I can admit that. So let's let the mods decide if you are harassing members or not. If not I guess they will ban me.

its a Toyota truck and that's all the modifications needed
that dude was not telling the truth about issues he was having with his truck, he ripped off his insurance company because he abused his truck on the beach and then pissed and moaned like others following Smitty99 lead that Toyota sucks , after he abused the truck and if you notice I said under Pinocchio, he wasn't telling the truth

I will do my best. So back on topic.

I have this issue. I am not looking for an extended warranty, lawsuit, to lemon law my truck, or to trade it in. I have put hundreds of thousands of miles on several different toyota trucks. I am a Toyota enthusiast to the nth degree. This thread is for 3rd gen owners to talk about their problems relating to this issue and any ideas for potential fixes even if Toyota deems it normal. If you are here to attack OP or any member with this problem please move along.

Unfortunately this thread has highlighted what I hate most about the Internet.

We are fortunate to have the entirety of human knowledge at our fingertips. Surprisingly, very few use it to educate themselves or do anything else productive. It's a sad reflection on humanity.

There is always a small but vocal group who try to make themselves feel tough or otherwise cure their own insecurities by putting down others and saying things that they're too fearful to say in the 'real world' for fear of getting their ass kicked. That's the unfortunate thing about the anonymity that the Internet provides.

Smitty99 and most of the rest of us really did speak our mind both here and to real people at dealerships and elsewhere. Mushy just runs his mouth here because he enjoys poking the bear without any real world consequences.

Unfortunately, it's not just him. If he gets booted, there will be others. Some people are just like that.

I have read the last several pages and have learned nothing about the rear diff issue.
On the extended warranty . ..I called Toyota after my truck was in the shop and the dealer couldn't locate or fix the noise and Toyota offered me the extended warranty. I didn't ask for it. They offered it at my first complaint.
Honestly, if they would fix the noise I would give the extended warranty back. it is useless anyway. If they aren't fixing the rear diff issue under warranty. I feel Toyota is using the extended warranty to shut us up. I would rather have the truck fixed.

Well, I had my truck in for it's 16k maint last week and the techs also had another go at the whine. To review, they've already replaced my transfer case, citing the output shaft bearing as the culprit. Nope.
They found the noise again, and the corrective action is to replace the....... transmission. Yeah, I was at a loss for words for a few seconds too. I mean, I'm all about letting them do their jobs.. but holy hell. I don't feel good about all the major drivetrain component swaps!

On the bright side, the service writer/techs have been very professional. Not even a hint of operates as designed or couldn't replicate horseshit.

    MTF,

Wow! talk about throwing parts at a problem. Seems they are convinced the sound is from further up than most of us believe... is this based on micing the truck?

Well this will really send the rodent into a frenzy......

About 30 minutes ago I get a call from corporate. They told me that they are sending an extended warranty to me in the mail.

In previous conversations I politely expressed my lack of confidence in the entire drivetrain and they called me back with this.

At least Toyota is trying. Now I'll at least keep it until the warranty expires.

TBH, I don't know if they were using mics. I should ask them that :anonymous:

I can tell you they've had the truck up on the hoist and running at speed a couple of times. Techs said the noise was very noticeable, and that my diff was.... quiet. Yeah, quiet.

I keep asking myself - there's no way Toyota would keep authorizing these expensive repairs if they thought them a fool's errand, would they?

    SMH,

    Frank

I get a LOT of people private messaging me for details on the supposed TSB for this truck. I just want to let everyone know I am sharing everything I know here publicly, not privately so you know what I know. There is nothing I can share that I haven't already shared. Still a waiting game.

As for the noise being "mic'd" they isolated the noise in both my rear ends by putting the truck on the lift and using a stethoscope. They did say the noise is absolutely from the rear carrier assembly which is why they replaced the first one.

Took my truck in yesterday. Waste of my time and a quarter tank of my gas... What sort of a gump dealership doesn't replace fuel used during diagnosis.

Master tech wrote that he could not hear the noise. I respectfully requested a ride along, which is scheduled for the 20th.

...Had they just admitted the noise and documented it, there would have been no problem. I am a bit pissed about the way they are handling it.

While I have a 2007 Gen 2, I have been thinking about trading up to a gen 3. I have been reading these threads trying to glean real information that might be useful. That said, I have to respond to the post a few pages back about the guy whose transfer case was replaced (with no improvement on the noise) then they decided to replace his transmission. In the early 70's I worked at a British car dealership and they had an XKE Jaguar that was an electrical (Lucas electrics) nightmare so the head mechanic (British) came into the parts dept. and gave us a list of electrical components. For several days he would swap them one by one trying to fix the car. Once it was running well he just brought back what he didn't leave on the car. And then there were the blown Fiat 124 engines laying about because their timing belts failed and the valves hit the pistons. I loved that place, didn't work there long, but loved it. Hope this lightens the thread some. Tim

I am somewhere inbetween fighting it tooth and nail and not caring at all.

My time is more valuable to me than a howling noise that doesn't seem to have any effect on how the truck drives.

On the other hand, it is unethical to act like the noise does not exist.

Love my truck, might be starting to hate the service department...

I recently had my 2016 at the dealer's for its 10,000 mile service and complained about the differential whine. The techs verified the whine and contacted Toyota. At first, the idea was to replace gears in the differential but then Toyota called back and nixed that because, I was told by Toyota in a follow-up call, that the "noise is nothing unusual," and that a "new differential wouldn't cure it." I had a feeling that was the answer I was going to get, but I pressed...a little...and asked "Exactly what is causing the whirring-whining-howling noise?" Well, no answer was forthcoming. I intend to "whine" about this problem to Toyota every month until I get a satisfactory answer and hopefully resolution.

Confirmed mine today. It howls when letting off the throttle on the highway, exiting on the ramps. I notice it for sure now, but IDK why people are freaking out. My jeep howled when I had 4.56 gears in it, howling doesn't always indicate your axle is going to blow up/give. Usually when you let off the throttle and it begins to decelerate very fast almost like a long downshift, that's a good indicator the diff is crap.

Going over different types of pavement like concrete, bridges, etc. make loud howling itself alone.

I have the 8inch rear with 4.30g , looking through this thread I noticed it's the bigger 8.75/TRDOR guys with more complaints.

My truck still drives good other than the needle bearing needing to be replaced, but that was my fault from lifting it.
