    Toyota Dealer Master tech with a 3rd gen 2017 build 12/16 TRD OR mine makes the noise it started around 150 miles maybe earlier but when i drove with no radio at 53mph to 66mph after 67mph i cant hear anything. Now id problem not give a damn but my whole commute to work is from 52-60mph its annoying as crap I might change the fluid and see what happens i really dont want to touch my new truck. We'll see I could make a case with toyota and see what they say.

    I had to chuckle.. My coworker has the same truck as me. When I told him aboit the issue he responded with "So, I never drive 55".

    Goes to show it isnt annoying until it is. Let us know how the fluid change goes..

    Just an FYI: anyone that is having a noisy diff issue should report it with Toyota Customer service: opening up a case. This will help put pressure on the supplier to fix the issue, and this could also push a hardware correction in the future that rectifies the issue. As it is now, it seems there is no issue; which we all know is not true.

    You'll probably still only get noise abatement tops, at least those that follow will get a quieter gearset.

    Welp, on Thursday my rig is going in for round two... transmission replacement. With my luck, I'll end up with the shitty detent ball thingy and have to strong arm it outa sixth.

    What has been going wrong with the transmission (other than the usual shitty shifting)? EDIT: Nevermind I just read some of your previous posts about it. Looks like Toyota throwing parts at problems again with no RCA.

    Nothing. The techs think that is where MY driveline noise is coming from. They've already replaced my T-case.

    Yup, no joke. Thankfully the new T-case has been flawless, and believe me I've been "testing" it frequently this winter!

    Oh, and I have the M/T.

    Hi Frank, can you describe the drive line noise, at what speed, load, what provokes it, etc...?

    Brad;

    Apologies for any confusion, it's the same whine under identical conditions to most others in this thread:

    90-100 km/h, only when feathering throttle. If you let off or take up on the gas just a small amount, the noise goes away. Right from the start of this process, the techs said my rear diff was quiet as a church. I know they had the truck on a hoist and were running it at the aforementioned speeds to diagnose. As Smitty stated earlier, they seem to be throwing parts/time at the problem without any idea of the root cause. I'm willing to play along for now, but I can't help but think corporate will put a stop to the waste sometime very soon. To the dealership's credit though, when I told them the noise was still present after the first repair, they didn't even blink - on with the next swap! :notsure:

    Thanks for the great description. I am researching ring and pinion machining methods and crush sleeve "over-crushing" over time. I had a crush sleeve "over-crush" before; leading to a noisy ring and pinion... followed by a catastrophic failure. Crush washers are not that durable.

    Forgive my ignorance, but would an "over crush" condition mean that the preload would go to shit, the pinion depth would be off, or both?

    Definitely preload going to a loose state (which would affect gear mesh clearances and would likely howl) and potentially ending up with the pinion contacting the differential.
