IIRC, it contributes to the total preload but has nothing to do with setting the depth of the pinion.
The FSM ommits it during reassembly until final assembly.

Understood. Although, I did have that happen once with my 1987 Foxbody. The pinion contacted the spider carrier due to a "overly crushed" crush sleeve caused by an aggressive downshift wheel hop. Perhaps this is not an issue with the Toyota's hardware.

I have some kind of howl. I am not sure what it is. It may be the rear end. I get it around 40mph, at very light "on and off" throttle, when going down hill. FYI: I drove the truck about 60 miles lightly when new, I changed my fluid with the Toyota overpriced lube at 1000 miles, and I babied the truck. The howl began at about 2.5k. I now have just under 5k miles on the truck. The issue hasn't gotten worse, and I have to listen very carefully for it.

You have to assemble It about 95%(minus crush washer) and do the tolerance checks. If it doesn't check out, you have to completely disassemble to get at the washers that set pinion depth or the side bearing washers for backlash.
I can't imagine them nailing them all on the first assembly. On a rebuild that was properly set the first time; maybe.

Keep an ear on it. My first rear diff got louder as miles and time stacked up quickly. My 2nd (replacement diff) seems to be holding about the same level of noise over about 8k or 9k miles now.

    Sure will.
Do you know if it affects anyone with aftermarket leafs installed before the noise started?

Not sure on that one. Service Manager at my dealer told me don't touch ANYTHING on the truck until they get the rear diff situation sorted out because he said if anything is aftermarket can be attributed to the mods, it will usually be held against you and dealer holds first right of refusal regardless of the Magnusson-Moss crap. Because who really has time and money to lawyer up for a denial of service? Hopefully your dealer won't notice. If you have aftermarket tires they'll certainly blame them for the noise.

I "think" you can add me the list for this issue/quirk. But I have to be honest the "slight howling" i hear on my truck, which seems to be coming from the rear end area, does not do it all the time which is weird. When I do hear it I do get when feathering the throttle from 53 to 58 mph. Also when it happens mine is very slight...barely audible when it does do it....and you have to be listening for it to hear it. To be honest I don't think I would have ever heard it if I hadn't seen this thread here on TW. My OCD thanks you TW! lol

I just had my truck in for the Toyota care 5000 mile service and I did ask the techs to check it out, just so I could officially document that I asked about it. After looking at my truck they reported back that they were not able to recreate and or hear the sound. Doesn't surprise me to be honest. Like I said even I can't hear it all the time and I am really listening for it. Because of how intermittent it is on my truck I am starting to wonder if it isn't just the tires on a certain road surface and or a resonance of some other wind noise where I need some sort of additional sound mitigation measure to take care of it. Who knows. My truck is completely stock by the way.

The truck has been perfect since I took her off the lot. As my service writer told me after they couldn't recreate it, they emphasized for me to keep an ear on it. If it gets worse or persists to the 10k service mark they will look at it again. Important thing is they said now it is documented and on record so if anything does go wrong with the truck because of this intermittent noise it is on record and I will be grandfathered in to any fix or TSB it needs.

I plan on keeping an eye on this thread but will just continue to enjoy the truck as it has been perfect for me. I have confidence in Toyota's rep and reliability to fix this issue down the road should it actually require a fix. Nothing else can be done at this point anyway from what it sounds like.

I do appreciate all the updates people are posting here on their experiences, so that is why i thought I would do the same. Happy new year everyone.

That's good that you're keeping tabs on it and getting it documented. Some of us had the noise start out faintly then it got increasingly louder over time. My first one really picked up about 8000 miles and by 10k they replaced the rear end it was so loud.

That interesting to hear. I did listen to the video you posted earlier in this thread of your howling sound coming from the rear end of your truck and that sounds horrible! That level of noise is unacceptable.

Mine....when I hear it...is no where near the level of noise you have in your cab. As you mentioned though I will keep an ear on it and should it get progressively worse and or appear all the time I will not hesitate to take it in again before the 10k service. My local dealership also offered I could come in anytime and the service manager would me more than happy to go on a ride with me so I can point out the noise. I appreciate knowing I can do that...but like I said the only problem for me is the noise on mine is very faint and doesn't do it all the time so at this point it doesn't make sense for me to bring it back in.

It is officially documented now on my service record so I am satisfied at this point. I do appreciate all the info on this thread.

I have the howl, have had it since about 200 miles. Didn't really think anything of it till now. Happens when I let off the gas almost completely or coast around 45MPH + My truck has 1200 miles on it now. Should I be taking it into the dealer for this now? Seems like some mixed responses when people take them in.

If it doesn't bother you live with it until it's loud enough to bother you then take to dealer.

My second diff has gotten louder than when it was first installed. It still has not become as loud as the first, but it is close...hard to quantify. It is not unbearable, but I know it is there and has amplified over time.

I wish I could buy some wheels and tires, but I don't want the tire pattern to be the 'culprit.' I am still holding off on any mods due to this.

On a brighter note: the braking shudder was repaired by a tsb!
