I think you're spot on. My last truck was an 05 Z-71 which had 4:10 gears. They made the exact same noise as the new Tacoma for 190K miles with no problems from the rear end at all, besides the sound. Loved that truck. Love this one too.

Since Toyota doesn't have a current fix, I went ahead and addressed the rear end noise with 1000 watt 5-channel amp, new speakers, and a 10" sub. :)

I'm going to use Audacity and see what the frequency of the 4.30:1 is.

How was this calculated. Could always offset your phase and add the signals... See if it cancels.

Might be a fun project to pipe in the noise @ around 55. Small speaker under the bench or something.

Could really be onto something here...

Toyota isnt very quick to recall or fix issues. It took many lawsuits and lots/years of legal red tape to get them to do something about the frames. Then it took people dying for them to fix the air bag and sticky throttle issues they had. People see that toyota doesnt recall many things or have as many TSB, and think that means they are "reliable" and Toyota stands behind their product. But really its just stubbornness from Toyota.

GM has lots of recalls/TSBs, but they are proactive in fixing their mistakes. THAT is standing behind your product.

I wasn't sure that's why I fought tooth and nail for corporate to give me the Platinum 8year/125k coverage once I was close to meeting lemon law criteria and had several issues requiring visits on top of the "major drivetrain component" replacement (carrier assembly)

Ha....I'm from Florida so I've had my fair share of humidity.

I'd like to see how Brad determined this though.

Hi Scornwell. Its rough, but here goes. First I want to determine my wheel's revolutions/second at 45 mph (the speed where the noise appears to be the loudest on my truck). [45 miles/hour] * [5280 feet/mile] * [12 inches/foot] = 2,851,200 inches/hour. Convert to inches per second: [2,851,200 inches/hour] * [1hour/3600 seconds] = 792 inches/second. My tire is 28 inches in diameter, so the circumference of the tire is 28 * pi = 88.96 (rounded to 2 sig figs). My rear wheel's revs/second = [792 inches/second] / [88.96] = 8.9 revs/second. I am unsure, but I believe the ring gear has 39 teeth, causing 39 gear tooth meshes per revolution. Thus gear tooth meshes/second = [8.9 revs/second] * [39] = 347 gear tooth meshes/second. If each gear tooth mesh event makes a similar sounding noise, then there are 347 of these noises per second. Thus the frequency of the howl is 347 Hz.

Hi. See my response to Scornwell for the calculation. As far as the phasing, I wonder if that will be one of big T's approaches... Why waste valuable resources fixing the problem?

Pretty straightforward Brad. I like it. I was guessing about 400Hz by ear, but was too busy to do the math. You Are the man!

Seems pretty darn close. Maybe 400Hz at about 51mph with stock tires. I would like to record the sound and compare it to the speeds as an exercise.

    It's a 3.909 gear, so I'm thinking 43-11 toothcount.
Correct me if I'm wrong; for a 3.909 gear, anything under 40 on the ring would compromise thickness at the root of the tooth.
