I'll keep you all posted! For some reason I am feeling optimistic about the field engineer looking at it again (whenever that happens). I hope they will let me talk directly to him at some point if our schedules allow it. Either way I am anxious to find something out, and anything I hear I will relay back to you all. Hopefully it will be something useful that you all can use as ammo at your dealers!

For an update, I had to tape the top lca as well as the other three on the bottom. Happy to report that so far this seems to have fixed my issue of howling. Keeping fingers crossed. Hoping my diff doesn't decide to take a dump. But now I have a very slight squeak that occurs intermittently, very faint so far...grrrr...hopefully won't get worse but if it does, I will be bringing it up at the dealership when serviced.
I truly hope they get the problem fixed for you guys that are having diff issues, and thanks for you guys keeping everyone updated on what you find out.

Oh man, if you’re on your second one, that may change things somewhat. It could be a bad install as these things (diff) don’t normally go out often if at all, for most vehicles and you need a bit of tech experience and know how to get it right.
No biggie really, after you do a few or several ones, but not at all hard to get it right on the very first install for a good experienced tech.

So if we rule out install, we need to rule out defective part also, because the odds of getting two bad parts are heavily against it.
But I would then have to introduce another possibility, that being the diff housing itself, as it maybe different, at least internally on the trdor, or may have a tiny manufacturing defect idk.
But if it is, it may still be a trivial thing that may require something as a little grinding or adding some b/s filling or something like that.
We’ll just have to wait for the factory finding results, and that will probably also has to be verified by the parts supplier.

In the mean time, they usually extend your warranty to give you peace of mind, till the issue is resolved or positively identified.

Hope that helps in some way and I sincerely wish you and everyone with this issue the best of luck,
    Cheers!

Yeah, when I had my first diff replaced, I called corporate and they gave me the 7 year 100k warranty because of it. I have no complaints at all about the way I have been treated, and I get that shit happens (especially buying year 1 of a redesign). Just kinda sucks that I am on a first name basis with a lot of the guys at the dealership (not a knock on them ) when I haven't even had my 5k service yet...

Nope, wasn't even considering it when I bought the truck! So that worked out nicely! Calling and asking for it as compensation didn't even occur to me as an option, but I saw someone else on the forum had the same issue and that is what they did. I was like "Hey, that is a good idea! Worst they can say is no!"

I've never bought one, wouldn't even consider it based on statistical probabilities, I would just bank the money though, and spend it as see fit after the extended warranty would have expired, but to each their own, good for you

    Cheers!

Had an intermittent rattle squeak that just started around 12000 miles. Dealer found the right front body mount "loose and not centered". Fixed it and all is quiet again.

Thanks for that info. I'm gonna try to isolate the rattle squeak, it is definitely from the passenger area, sounds like from the front when I'm driving. I'll bring this up to check that mount if that's where the sound is coming from. I tried to bounce on the bumper to get it to squeak and isolate it, but of course it doesn't cooperate when I need it to. lol

    I'll check.

As a note, I had a 95 Caprice Wagon that exhibited a howling noise associated with the rear differential. That was at 109,000 miles. I sold the car at 221,000 miles and it still had the gear whine.

I really only heard mine when I was leaving my drive/neighborhood. Couldn't really hear it on the road. Mine didn't squeak by jumping up and down either. The guy that took the truck to the service bay heard it. They had to pull the grill to get to it. Hope you find it.

hmmm interesting. I hear mine intermittently driving down the road, paved or gravel, occasional bumps, just odd that is squeaks whenever it wants to.

Going to be a couple more weeks before I can get mine back in to have the second diff looked at. I'm hoping that @MasterPenguins will have an update for us by then!

A little OT: Make sure you guys do a good walk-around of your vehicle before you drop it off but ALSO the Loaner or Rental if they give you one.
I let my guard down and I had a door ding show up that I'm not sure where it happened but it was close to the time that I dropped my Truck off at the dealer. Also the loaner car I had ended up with some marks on the rear bumper like someone tapped it trying to park. Of course when I went to turn it back in they pointed it out. Luckily they felt bad because my truck has been in there so often, they said they would take care of it and told me not to worry. I was busy talking to some of the management when they delivered the rental car and the lady held the clip board up for me to sign. What I should have done is walked around first and checked the car but I trusted and could have got burned. Luckily for me they were nice about it but who knows if it was actually something that happened while I had the car... it very well could have been there before I ever took the keys.

Dropped my truck off two days ago for the 5k service. Told them I had a howling noise between 55-60 and a 2-3 second delay between R and D. The service writer stated that 9 times out of 10 the howling is caused by a bed mat. I laughed and said well that's an easy fix. He told me the whole process would take about an hour. Two hours go by and I approached the service writer to see what was up. He stated that it was not the bed mat and that I would need a new rear end. They have ordered a new rear end it comes in on the 11th, so now its just a waiting game...

Wow. Well there's another one! So some dealers are replacing the rear end and some dealers are saying it is normal. The inconsistency is maddening.

The first time I had it looked at, the dealership told me it was normal. I believe I uploaded a picture of the RO in the other diff thread. When I called corporate they asked that I get a second opinion from a different dealership, who basically told me that they didn't know if it was normal or not.

When I took it back to the original dealership for the repair, per corporate instruction, I rode along with one of the techs who said something along the lines of "It definitely doesn't sound normal, not sure why we didn't catch it the first time".

I hope I do too! The field engineer that approved my first replacement, and that will be looking at my second one is hosting a Toyota training thing all of this week, so I was told that hopefully we can get something scheduled for next week. If I haven't heard from my service advisor by Monday (8/8) I will give him a call to find out what is up. So if we are lucky, I may have more information for you guys by the end of next week!
