Just noticed it on mine this morning, right around 60 MPH, only have 2400 miles on it. Very faint and had to focus on listening for it to hear it. Going to bring it up at my 5k service.

Makes me wonder if factory backlash on the mesh is set incorrectly, that would make noise and cause excess wear which worsens as the diff wears down, and dealers following the FSM are setting replacement differentials incorrectly as well perhaps. Has anyone taken theirs to a reputable diff shop and had them inspect? Do the guys who re-gear have these problems?

Sorry if that has already been covered but 101 pages is a lot of information to sift through.

The dealers aren't setting anything up. They are dropping in replacement 3rds that are made in the same factory as the originals with the same problem.

I don't think anyone has paid out of pocket to have it fixed by a non-Toyota shop yet. I would really like to, but I don't have enough time to deal with it now.

No end in sight. They should consider stopping production until they can come up with real permanent solutions. They keep trying to come up with patches and quick fixes or outright denials of existing problems on a truck that probably should have never been released to the masses in it's current form.

Well, nothing gets designed and produced perfectly with no issues. There are always issues, they just might be transparent to the end customer. Trucks, cars, airplanes, they all make it to production with flaws and design oversights that need to be corrected.

I wouldn't care one bit if Toyota acknowledged there was an issue and fixed it. I just don't want to spend the next 100k miles hearing that it is "normal."

So they think swapping in a new part without changing any of the numerous variables that go into setting a differential will fix the problem?

No. I don't think that they are under any kind of delusion that it will actually fix the problem. I think the dealers are just happy to take the warranty hours and at the same time be able to look like they are servicing the client well. I don't think that the average dealer honestly thinks that swapping out the rear will actually fix it at this point in the game.

Update: 03/06/17, had the TSB performed, the sound was a little muffled, but still very noticeable. I immediately turned around, and the dealer has it back in the bay, theyre going to replace the diff oil with another "better synthetic" brand. Ill keep you guys posted.

Now this is interesting. I would love to try a different oil but don't want to void the warranty. Thanks for keeping us informed.

It won't help. Don't ask me how I would know since I obviously wouldn't run differential oil of a different spec and void my warranty, but I can definitely say that it won't help.

Got it back again after the diff oil change. It didnt help...

I would by lying if I said the heat shield TSB didnt help the noise, but the noise is still present, its to the point I can drown it out with the radio if need be.
