Whats called for is 75-85 but l think some guys are trying 75-90 which is probably not a good idea because of the warranty.

As long as the fluid looks the same a dealer won't really know. There is no way to test it except by eye.

2000 miles and noticed mine is doing the howl at 50-55 mph when I press the pedal slightly. At present the noise is annoying but not too loud.

    Edit. Stock DBLB OR 2017.

Was the 8year/125k warranty free from the "tranny fluid issues"? If so, wonder how you went about it?

Yes, no cost, as a customer service 'goodwill' to me, an unhappy and disappointed new taco owner. I went thru corporate while dealing with low fluid and dealership issues, and I asked about an extended warranty. After several back and forth conversations, corporate granted this extended warranty. They alleviated my concerns and won back some confidence that they do care about their customers. I was always polite during conversations, but did express my disappointment. I think they are trying, but big corporations are like government, slow moving, but eventually come around.

To get the thread back on topic... has anyone had success having an competent independent shop take a look at the diff setup? The one I showed it to did not want to touch it out of concern for not being able to guarantee a fix and voiding our warranty in the process. Is there someone who has access to a more receptive gear wizard?
I suspect Toyota would have tried a blueprinted setup at some point - I am sure they knew about the noise from the rear before market as it is common enough to have been obvious during testing.

I don't have the noise after 3000 on my Utility SR auto trans with LB AC. I have changed my rear and front diffs with Amsoil 75w90 severe gear oil at 1300 miles though.

Figured I would provide an update on my situation as well.

Made an appointment yesterday to have my rear diff serviced/replaced AGAIN. Had the OE one replaced at 10k due to a rear end howling that my dealer/service tech acknowledged and confirmed; its been another 10k(now at 20170), and the howling noise is back. This time it seems more prevalent and proves constant at 55 mph, and doesn't seem to require the truck be decelerating, as was the case before.

F&%$, man. Guess we will see what happens; pretty sure if it has had 3 rears by 30k, I'll be looking to get rid of it(and it might even qualify as a lemon in VA, who knows at this point).

I find it soooo fucking irritating that they are replacing some diffs and not others for the exact same issue. The "engineers" flew in and confirmed that my diff is howling (no shit).......then deemed it normal. Really? you designed a howling noise into your differentials? Why? I didn't catch that in the brochure. That's just plain stupid. Why would they even replace any diffs? At this point it's clear that it does not resolve the problem.

Lemon only applies for the first 18 months you own the vehicle is my understanding. But I have already contacted a lawyer about mine. There is absolutely no reason why Toyota cant fix this issue, my TSB didnt fix a damn thing, and everybody knew that it wouldnt.

Ive talked to Corporate about my situation, told them I dont want the truck if theyre not going to fix it. Basically told me to fuck myself, told me to look at my owners manual for my options.

Sounds about right, unfortunately. And in all honesty, I'm sure you're right....it most likely wont qualify for the lemon law, but I've had a couple people suggest I look into it anyway. They seem to believe if the same problem has been addressed 3 times over prior to 36k and hasnt been resolved, the vehicle might qualify. I'm not getting my hopes up by any means; in all honesty I love the truck, but this is too much. I didn't purchase a $40,000 truck with the anticipation I would have to budget for rear-end replacement every 10,000 miles.....ludicrous.

On my initial visit to the dealer, I even suggested they re-check toyota's factory back-lashing specs, and compare them to what's in my rear.....I was told that the only solution at this stage in the game was complete replacement.

And....If any of us wanted to sell our trucks privately (as opposed to trading it in) who the hell is going to buy one with a howling diff? Anybody, regardless of their mechanical knowledge would immediately hear it. I know this because every single person who rides in my truck (even children) says, "what's that noise?" I guess we could just tell them "it's normal"!:frusty:

Mine didnt start making the noise until about the 1K mark, I know for sure that I wouldnt have bought the truck if I had heard this noise.
