To be clear that TSB specifically addresses a howl caused by the transmission heat shield. Not the rear diff.

I was told that the harmonic was coming through the rear diff up the drive line and into the cab through the transmissions heat shield. I knew this wouldnt work but had it performed anyways. Sound will follow the path of least resistance into the cab.

I agree with you that this doesnt address the actual harmonic coming from the diff, but it is a TSB that addresses the howl coming from the diff.

I see what you're saying, but again the bulletin doesn't say anything about the diff itself. Also, this condition affects more than just MT trucks; Toyota is addressing it just for us? It's possible your dealer is being legit and Toyota won't put the reasoning in writing as well.

Here's a photo of the first page FWIW. The rest is just instructions. BTW I do NOT work for Toyota just have a 2 day TIS subscription that I'm trying to get the most out of lol.

I wish I knew more, and I could answer who the good guy is here. Everybody knows that the sound is coming from the diff at the dealer, and there's this awkward "we cant do anything until Toyota says so" attitude. Couple that with Toyota Corporate's "nothing else we can do" attitude, it leaves us stranded. I have been talking with lawyers, and may have a fairly strong case for Lemon.

Also my understanding is that "only manual transmissions have the howl" -Dealership

Best of luck with all of that. It's not a fun road to go down. It's definitely irritating but I could live with the howl if it means no early wear or lack of reliability. But typically these sounds mean parts are doing something they shouldn't

The harmonic noise coming from the transmission heat shield is a different noise than the one coming from the differential. I have both noises and they are distinctly different although they do happen in roughly the same speed range.

The heat shield noise has a higher pitch and seems to come from everywhere. The differential noise has a lower pitch and clearly comes from the rear.

I'll have to get the heat shield TSB done soon, but I just haven't had time.

Thats the thing, this didnt start until about the 1000 mile mark for me, and I know for certain I wouldnt have bought this truck had I heard the sound. Its a very irritating sound. I said it before, $40K is entirely too much money to pay for something that isnt perfect.

Mine is little less high pitched for sure now, but the diff still drowns out the radio. Good luck with yours.

I was at a similar mileage when mine was replaced. Hopefully, you will have an updated part installed....however, I'm fearful you will have the same results I did. Mine was replaced, and about 5k later I was back in with the same issue.

It is at THAT point, sir, that you become a part of the 'it's normal' club.....having the diff replaced once will likely, at some point, become a right of passage. lol

Audio quality stinks, but listen closely at 4-5 seconds and 13 seconds and you'll hear the "coke bottle" howl.
