That's my question too. Maybe another poll for if you have the howl which rear end and with or without the locker?

I just cast my yes vote for the gear whine.. I have almost 41000 miles on my 2016 TRD OR and it hasn't given me any grief knock on wood. I just wish this thing wasn't so gutless off the line.

Just found this thread and I'm having this same issue with my 2017 SR5. Was just at dealer today had them check wheel bearings. Soon as they saw my truck (3" lift and 285 70 17's) they started with their shit. Well it's not the wheel bearings now. They checked that. They drove it and hear something but they want me to come back with stock wheels on so they can hear it better. They said they'll give me one more hour and their gonna start charging me.

We talked about this the other night too....I have the SR Utility with the Auto trans, 2800 miles on it, 8 inch rear end...no locker, have changed out my Diffs with Amsoil severe gear 75w90, no howl as of yet, have gone from 0 to 100 mph looking for, we'll listening for the howl, as of this printing...I have no rear end howl what so ever ...

I think it's the weight of the gear oil. I bet if we used thicker oil it would dampen the sound. We'd probably lose 1-2 mpgs in the process though.

That's my hypothesis on why it's happening and an explanation on why its not been fixed yet by Toyota. (They can't without crushing their EPA rating that's already fairly lackluster). I think ECGS recommends a much heavier oil for Tacomas.

Unfortunately, I don't have the desire to be the test subject for this experiment, because with my luck the diff would explode, they'd test the oil, and I would be up shit creek with an 8 year 125k warranty that I couldn't even wipe my ass with.

Several guys on here have swapped it out and it still did not fix the issue. We also had 75-85 in the later 2nd Gens with no howling issues.

Is the howling issue based on a particular factory. Are tacomas coming from the San Antonio or Mexico plant having a bigger quality control issue with these howling differentials breaking.

My truck was made in San Antonio with a build date of November 2016 and my differential makes no noises. The truck runs like a sewing machine with 8400 miles on the odometer. My truck is an early 2017 production model so would it fall under this differential issue.

I'm curious the percentage of 3rd gen models that are affected by this.

All good questions, from what I can see it seems to be a completely hit or miss thing, sure hope my 17 will be one that does not have it.

Mine was made in San Antonio in February 2016. It howls slightly, not louder as of yet.

85w-140 does not change the howl at all and doesn't impact fuel economy in any way. I had the same suspicion that you do, but it didn't make a bit of difference.

The differential assemblies themselves aren't made in either the San Antonio or Mexico facilities. They are made in the same factory somewhere in Asia and shipped to the assembly plants to be installed.

According to this thread about 50% of respondents report hearing it.

So it's not a small number. Even if this pill was off by orders of magnitude, it's a very large number.

'17 ACLB sport 6MT here. Built in San Antonio. I have the howl. This busts several hypothesis in the last couple pages...

Any 4 cylinder trucks having this issue? Mine is silent with 80w90 Super Tech. Put it in at 5000 miles to get the metal out. I am at 20,000 now.

If this was affecting 50% of 3rd gen models would it have had a massive recall by now. Half of the 3rd gens coming off the assembly line can't be having this issue. It has to be more like 10% of the total units produced.
