My SIL is in the market for a 16 and up DC. What should he be looking out for as trouble spots? I have a 2007 Prerunner so not really up on the 3rd gens.

There is nothing serious yet. The 16's had the most issues which were slowly resolved.

The most expensive concerns are the high pressure fuel pump and the radio. The high pressure pump was noisy on the 16's and some 17's but not failing. The radio can freeze on any model.

I would encourage a 17+ and to have it inspected independently. That way if rust is an issue it wont be hidden from you.

16 and 17 do not have the safety stuff. There were some complaints about the shifting and there were some flashes to try and fix that. Note that the shifting issues are subjective. Some people notice and others don't.
Depending on inventory, you may be able to get into a leftover 2019 when 2020s hit the lot for not much more than a used truck.
If looking at Blazing blue pearl, take a good look at the roof, there was a paint issue that a few people had.

I've had my 2018 TRD Sport DCSB just over a year now and -0- issues, but that's been my experience with both the Tacomas I've owned.

Thanks to all. He’s just starting to look and I don’t want him to buy a potential problem.

Inspect the truck thoroughly, as you would do with any vehicle. Most issues you will encounter on here are completely overrated. Personally, I would stay away from any first year model vehicle as those are the guinea pigs. Otherwise, enjoy the truck.

The Gen 3s have their quirks but have been very reliable.

17 here and the only real issue I’ve had is that the timing cover is leaking oil but will be repaired under warranty. A common thing in 16-17 Tacoma’s.

I have the 16, bought used with 8200 miles. Had the TSB done for shifting, now has about 18600 miles and zero issues. Love not having all the safety stuff but that’s just my opinion...

Get a 2019. You can pretty much steal one at this point and they're great. Financing is much better on new also.

When I bought my truck, new was cheaper than used. Getting the manual also saved my $5000 off MSRP because they don't sell fast. The stealership had 3 on the lot wrapped in plastic for over a month. As for problems, almost 30,000kms and it has been perfect.

Not the best for towing, don't expect great gas mileage.

Mechanically the truck has been great with 51k. Only problem for me is the rear diff howling which the TSB made very little difference and Toyota claims is fine. You get used to it though. Handles and drives great.

Tell them to drive the truck too. Not everyone is a fan of the poor low end torque and erratic leap when you step on the gas to get some power from low speeds. Driving experience is important to some people.
