As we draw to a close the last of the most popular Tacoma ever, does anyone have the final production numbers of the 3rd gen? 1.8 or 2 million units?

Same here. I thought the third gen was atrocious when it came out but it grew on me. Glad I got one.

Despite three fewer model years, Gen3 outsold Gen2 roughly 1.8mil to 1.6mil. So, as a famous coach once said, you are what your sales say you are, or something like that…

But, if we an all be friends here, you can also say that 3.5 million trucks were sold through two generations of the same basic, outstanding platform. No matter how you interpret the sales data, the final Gen3 rolling off the line is literally the end of a historic 20 year run for Toyota. It’s not an overstatement to say that if you own a Gen2 or Gen3 right now, you’re literally driving truck history.

Godspeed to Gen4 with its magical seats, b/c it has Godzilla-sized shoes to fill.

Picked up a 2020 last week with 19K miles, so I figure I'm good for another 10 years or so. Although with my track record I know that won't be true since I switch cars a lot, but it feels good to be back in a Toyota. I do like the new Gen4's but I figure it will be around 2026 before the kinks are worked out of that generation at which point I may pick one up, who knows. Right now though I am digging my 2020.

Very well said! The 2nd and 3rd gens have deep roots in Toyotas very old school truck philosophy .

In an effort to improve fuel economy and meet strict regulations all new gas powered vehicles will be made with lawn mower engines until 2035 or thereabouts when they'll switch to a wind up mechanism on the back of the vehicle. Buyers will be forced to wind them up and quickly jump inside to steer before they rocket down the street for a quick, but short burst. At which point the driver or passenger will need to get out and wind them up again.

The irony that the turbo 4 banger will have more power than the current V6.

Some good points. Not to mention a pandemic and supply chain issues thrown in there. Yes, wonder what the total Canadian and American sales were for the 3rd gen. I know they are very popular up here.

You do know that smaller engine has to work harder and at higher rpms to reach that " power " with V6 reaching it almost no effort right?

Before you say " Most of us don't tow " , yes you are right. But most of us modifying trucks and huge tires are part of it.. Now lets wait and see how lawn mower engine will choke trying to rotate those tires and give you sht mpg, power, screaming noise from under the hood xD

Enjoy your Ford Maverick ! Except that small size truck weights way less than your truck will :)

i believe this photo is from one of the G4's that were available to the press and tested in hawaii early this year. if this is what the engine bay looks like, i am not too optimistic about the assembly of the rest of the truck.

i am not a fan boy of any manufacturer of anything. i buy based on value and what i determine is best for my needs. i think most would agree the exterior styling of the G4 is too busy and has been overdone.

it'll be interesting to see it person. my hunch is there are going to be a lot of growing pains. i believe the 4 cylinder turbo will produce good power and most of us that are objective will consider it an improvement in that category. ford and GM have already proved that to be the case. but, i think the fuel mileage will be a disappointment for those of us that live where it's not flat.

i agree with the post above that mentioned something to the effect that the release of the G4 will not hurt the sales value of used G3's. i am happy about that.

The engine bay of the 4th gen looks well thought out in my opinion. At least doesn’t have all that crazy piping like ford eco boost engines have

The engine bay looks pretty busy imo. One thing that stands out that I do like is the battery location. Lessens the taco lean.

Turbo engines are just too complicated.
    Normally Aspirated engines are best.
