With me being in law enforcement you have literally no idea how true that statement is.

I took the time out of my busy day to venture outside of the 2nd Gen section and this is the first thread I find? Way to go, TW, for keeping things consistent. Other than the noticeable IQ drop, I feel like I'm right at home.

You are correct. Very little change, same frame, chassis, wheezy 4cyl., rear drum brakes, etc. Can't see why anyone would trade Gen 1 or 2. Good for Toyota's profits, for the consumer, not so much.

Best description? Moronic, immature or stupid? Oh what the hell, they all fit.

Like a nice Pit Bull beaten to bad behavior. Makes VW look good. Where is that? Need to send the Feds out to crush it.

So, has anyone gotten around to having an official, legal drag race between a 2nd Gen and this new 2.5 Gen to see if the paper numbers actually translate to a faster truck?

EPA investigators were in WV a couple months ago doing just that. They came down on certain aftermarket performance kit manufacturers, particularly those making diesel kits, fining them and supposedly shutting at least one down. Then followed the sales to distributors/dealers and fined them, then following it to the end user and fining them. They made it clear to independent mechanics they will be held responsible if they install any emission defeating devices. Now one mechanic I know said if he sees anything on a vehicle that could effect emissions he makes the owner of a vehicle sign a form that states his car was brought in with an emission defeating alteration before he will work on it. So they are taking action.

FWIW, the ECT Power mode has been around for a while. I have it on my '03 TRD Prerunner. It makes a noticeable difference in acceleration when I want that extra little bit.

I think it was around even on my '99 Prerunner. I was playin' around with ECT mode today and it does make a big difference in providing a bit more lower-end "oomph" when you want it.

Yeah it's actually really fun. I hope the new TRD Off Road has it.

I have a question about the drive line. Has the axle changed? More specifically the ring and pinion? I'm eyeing up the 3.9 gears as a great fit for a 32" tire in a 2nd gen. Thoughts?

I wouldn't bother upgrading gears for a 1" tire difference. In my opinion when you get 34" or bigger is when you see the right ROI on them.

I checked in, took a look, looked at the door, looked back into the forum, then looked to the door again and didn't turn back. It's like going into your favorite bar for a beer after work only to find all the beers on tap replaced by Zima, Bacardi breezers, some shitty hard cider and all the patrons are now skinny jean wearing, scarf rocking hipsters complaining about every little nuance. I walk out and say shit, there's goes masculinity and testosterone...
