I am thinking this is going to be no where near as popular a mod as it was for the 2nd gen from what I have read, but it was still something I wanted to try out. I know the mirror has already been moved up quite a bit, but I am a tall guy, just over 6', and the rear view mirror in the 3rd gen sits a bit low for me. I find myself looking around it from time to time, so I came up with a relocation bracket. This bracket moves the mirror up in the same plane as the windshield by 1.150". I am not sure how this translates to improving the blind spot over a set distance, but that number will come later if this actually works. It does however translate into the mirror being able to contact the headliner.

I spent a few hours drawing this up in SolidWorks after attacking my windshield and the current mount with a pair of verniers and taking some numbers down. I plan on 3D printing a model tomorrow and seeing how it mounts up.

If this idea meets with popular approval, I have a machinist who would take a crack at it and have them black anodized once complete.

Bear in mind that this is still totally a prototype and I am just getting a sense of whether this is worth pursuing having manufactured!

    Thanks guys!

Just PM him with an address and he mails it. Honor system for sending him a check if you decide to keep it.

Maybe he will chime in or someone else will.

Yes I have. I've done testing with a 3D printed model which went well. The mirror is able to touch the headliner when the bracket is installed. The design is out to my machinist who is giving it a once over. I'm going to receive one from him to do final testing with. Then I'll receive finished brackets made from 6061 aluminum anodized black.

I want one for sure. I'm in the same boat as you, 6' and have to look around the mirror a lot more than any other vehicle I've owned. It's not as bad as the 2nd gens, but just a touch higher would be awesome!

I thougt because 3rd gens mirror are on a double joint there wasnt much interest.

A joint behind the mirror and a joint at the windshield.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. If you angle the joint at the windshield up all the way, the top of the mirror gets quite close to being even with the sun glass holder level. For what ever reason, mine was delivered with the link angled quite low, which made the mirror seem very low.

this would be a convenient place to add a ram ball to mount electronics like dash cams, cb's, scangauge etc.

I had to go out and check... sure enough, two ball joints! I moved mine up as high as you can and it's so much better.

i'm interested also, but honestly a seat-dropping solution would trump this one for me. because i'm also uncomfortable from sitting too high, so i should honestly take care of that first... several birds with one stone, although dropping the seat may be a bit of work or investment (having an upholstery shop shave out the seat bucket at a minimum).
