I've seen PT398-03120 and PT398-34150 referenced. They're for the Camry and Tundra respectively and do not list the Tacoma as a compatible vehicle. Doesn't mean it isn't, just that it's not listed -- and thus possibly not supported if you have a problem.

Reading the install instructions, it isn't at all clear how they'd be installed into a Tacoma; if such instructions exist I've yet to find them. It *does* appear though that the PT398-03120 part required a Techstream notebook (not the Lite version) to register it to the ECU, making it a dealer-install rather than a DIY item.

I'd suggest searching the forum for those part numbers to locate the posts/threads and continue discussing them there; no need to divert this thread off topic.

You are 100% correct. The Toyota version required Toyota VIP to be installed and used to program. The only way to do this is techstream (I have and is super expensive) or have the dealer install.

Just our of curiosity i called my dealer this morning for a remote start quote i should have one in a hour or so

When I ordered my truck I asked for the cost of a remote start. My dealer couldn't come up with anything. So... with a customer standing there money-in-hand and they can't find a way to take that money... sorta says something to me. :) (they're certainly flexible; swapping the OEM tonneau off another truck to get me mine sooner.. and get them paid sooner... I imagine if there was an official OEM remote start they'd have come up with it)

    Lol really? Thats crazy

Most dealers have aftermarket shops install. Mine did anyways the toyota VIP is a pain in the butt to install and a tech is more expensive than a install bay

Yeah. Seemed weird. I put them in touch with a guy up the road doing installs for $275. I'm unsure if he's using Avital or your component, I never did dig any further as I'm kinda particular about the quality of wiring jobs on my vehicles.

Exactly I'm extremely picky about my cars and especially wiring. Everything has to be nice and neat. As i said before if i do a remote start in any vehicle i would challenge the dealer to find it thats how factory it looks at the end.

Here is the tacoma all said and done. Remote start is between the BCM

PT398-03120 is the part number I was given for my 2016 ORDC.

It says that's for a Camry, so we're not sure if it would work.

Keep us posted if it works out. Picking up my new taco in a few days and the dealer advised me there is no Tacoma factory remote developed yet.

    Installation instructions here: http://toyotaparts.sparkstoyota.com/install/PT398-03120inst.pdf

The big question is whether that part/connector is there on the Tacoma, whether the self-registration procedure will work, and what you'll do if it doesn't work since it required $$$ Techstream if self-reg fails.

Certainly if having a dealer install you avoid those questions. Still you're talking about a $290 item that's listed for a different Toyota model, and any dealer install costs will add a fair bit of $$.

A $130 pre-configured DIY option with instructions and support, using proven hardware that also offers future expandability to cell/gps remote capability (SmartStart) seems a bit of a no-brainer. (I have no connection with this effort)

My dealer quoted $580 when I purchased the truck, but could/would not provide part number, but guarantied it was OEM part. I declined at the price. Said it used standard key fob. I will be looking at this once we get some installed feedback from the first buyers. Do want to thank @nickj718 for his work and getting this out there.

For those of us who live in warm climates, I don't really see the point if the engine shuts off when you open the door. I get why it shuts off, but that kills the coolness for me.

Strictly speaking, much of that work on the OEM is installing the hood switch, which I believe is already installed on the Tacomas.

Your not installing a hood switch your enabling the signal to be send to the remote start

That way the tech with a key in his pocket pressing on the bumper leaning over the engine can't start the engine on accident and snap his shit up

I think it's embedded in the latch rather than a discrete pin switch.

Open the hood with the truck running and look at the dash info display. Mine certainly knows the hood's open. Ergo, there's one there somewhere. :)
