If only they made those packs in 7's since that's all you need. lol Ebay seems to be the cheapest route. The Posi-locks could work on the wires for the auto-headlights if you have them but probably just as easy to use a lineman's splice and solder.

I picked up a pack of the 24-26awg and a pack of 20-22awg. I plan to solder the 12v power wire.

Those sound like the posi-lock sizes and not the posi-taps? Might work but would require cutting each wire

They are posi-taps. Just double checked their website. Thought for a second I ordered the wrong ones.

Make sure you're not cold soldering (putting the solder to the iron tip) or getting things too hot and you should be able to minimize and drops. I didn't use anything on the floor but always better safe than sorry though. Believe @gpb also used aluminum foil to shield the wires from where he was soldering.

    Level kit,
Thanks for the tips, tin foil sounds like a great idea.

Believe it's generally used to clean wires that have oxidized after being exposed for a while and help make sure you have a clean joint. I didn't use any but some swear by it. I'd probably avoid using that big thick solder you have there also.

Correct. Helps guard against human error. Particularly when using a butane iron with hot exhaust ports.

Generally I've used it when soldering copper plumbing, helps clean up oxidized copper tubing. Typically not needed when soldering automotive wires, especially when you're using a rosin core solder.

I used a thin rosin core solder for this, as in 0.05in diameter made for electronics. Easier to work with since you don't end up flooding your work with solder. This is close to what I have, the actual spool I use is something I've had twenty years: https://www.radioshack.com/products/rosin-core-solder-1-5-oz

Should be fine. If that was in my parts drawer I'd use without a second thought. Not enough difference to go buy something else.

LOL. I just left my all weather mat in place. I didn't drip any solder on it. Shouldn't happen if you're using proper technique: heat the wire with the iron, touch the solder to it just long enough to sweat solder into the wires. If you're dropping solder you're doing something improperly.

If I had carpet mats I probably would have put down some cardboard or newspaper just in case though. :)

When I needed to set my butane iron down I set it on its inbuit stand on the cast aluminum running board.

I just said "here hold this" and hand it to my dad. He just took it to go get something to eat and had to remote start it.

    Looks good!

You'll find the braided copper wire soaks up more of the solder than solid core does.

Yeah not much you can do with that single strand mess. With the braided you can actually see it fill in between the individual wire strands. Use just enough to fill in but not completely coat the wraps as you still want to somewhat see the outline of the outer wraps and not just a big giant glob of solder. Also helps with heat transfer to "tin" the iron tip or get a little bit of solder on the tip prior to trying to solder the wires. A wet sponge after finishing each joint can help keep the tip clean.

You have to tin always. Leaving a solder tip with no tinning is a big no-no.

Wet sponge is fine for cleaning off solder but I use those gold colored Hakko tip cleaners. It's worth it's weight in gold.
