So I have a remote start on my Tacoma 3rd gen and it works good but of course as most of you already know, it kills the engine when I open the drivers door to get in which for me is very annoying. So yesterday I thought I’d try removing the door sensor to trick the vehicle into thinking the door was still shut. To my surprise it worked and it let me in to sit in the driver’s seat which was great. However, as soon as I put my foot on the brake to put the truck into gear it kills the engine even though I have the key fob in hand. Ideally I would think as long as you had the key fob in possession it should allow you entry and operation of the vehicle. I understand this is all safety feature and to discourage theft but it sure would be nice to discover a work around.

Interesting that it can do that. I can start the truck and leave it (I can manually lock it) but if anyone gets in it can be driven away. Nice to know the technology exists to shut the truck off that way, even if it isn't being utilized properly. Did you try pushing the start button again? I'm guessing it'll still shut off the truck, but still. This would be nice, at minimum, to allow the truck to warm up while you load items.

One reason the MT with N2 remote start is superior.

    Following!

I just got a 2021 TRD OR and have the remote start through the Toyota app. It sucks that the car shuts off every time you unlock the car to get in. There's got to be a way to bypass it to where the car doesn't shut off.

All you have to do it push the Start button again. It’s not like it locks you out for 5 minutes.

You removed the door sensor to fix the one problem now you have to remove the brake pedal to fix this problem .

I had the same, called Tacoma Beast and they said it was a Toyota safety deal. I'm with you, it is irritating, but I still like to be able to start it when I first wake up.

Speaking of that, mine will only stay running for 15 minutes. Is there a way to extend the run time?

Has anyone found a way to get around the "safety feature”?

There's a few people digging into reprogramming various computers, maybe they've stubbled on something?

If I can walk away (with the key) with it running, I don't see how continuing to run after I unlock the doors is any less safe.

It’s a safety feature... my 2014 Genesis did the same thing... shut off when the door is opened..

It’s safer in that it keeps people from driving away with your car if they broke the window...

every vehicle from the factory I’ve seen shuts off when the door is opened.

Where do you guys park your trucks? ... for.. uh.. research purposes..

Wonder how you’d explain your truck just disappearing to your insurance.

... Cause pressing a button is so annoying.

On my Jeep Wrangler, it keeps running when I open the door. You still have to have the fob and push the start button to get it out of park.

    "Deal breaker"

I have to push the button to start my truck aargggg!

There is no getting around it right now. I've found it's best to just accept and deal with the burden of having to get in your truck as you normally would and press the button.

Here is how you get around it. Buy and SR or SR5 with a key. Every time I get in my truck after remote starting it I just laugh uncontrollably because I know how much it kills you guys that have to press the button to restart. But then I have to insert my key and tap my brake pedal and realize that all the effort of having to insert my key makes me wish I had a push button. But then I would need to push a button. SoB. I just can't win. No matter which I chose I would have to lift my arm.

There’s more to it than just being too lazy to press the start button again, Having to reach in the truck and press the brake with one hand and Engine start button with the other when I open the door to get my snow brush is really inconvenient. I’d pay up to hundreds of dollars for a solution to the door open shutdown. I can’t imagine it’s for security, as it’s just as secure to have the truck shut off when brake pedals pushed. Which this truck does anyway if you bypass the door switch...

It comes in handy when it’s zero degrees out
But having to start the truck twice every time I use the remote start ?
    Nah
This is the first vehicle I’ve had that doesn’t have it
This is also the first vehicle that has push to start

you’d think they’d have a way to program the truck to recognize that the fob is near the truck when you get in after you’ve remote started it so it doesn’t turn off

but even if you start the truck manually and take the keys away anyone can still get in and drive off without the keys

I have a remote start too. It comes in handy yeah but I just don’t see what the big fuss is having to start up the truck as you normally would after it shuts off.
