I am a few years (10+) from my trades education ending. I did 6 more years and 2 degrees in college after, every single one of my friends who did the trades route, is a manager now, making 100k+ a year, while my accounting cohort is doing 50-60k a year 5 years in. Its wild the lies that are sold to kids these days.

For sure! University isn’t for everyone and nobody is going to want to be a plumber, carpenter or tradesman when they have a degree that’s flooded with people. I’ve tried to steer my kids towards a trade type skill set when they’re older. We shall see but there’s always going to be a need for people to fox things. Automation can’t get rid of us all!

I think even in the trades there needs to be some care on what people are forced towards. CNC operators are a good example, was heralded as the next big trades deal 10-15 years ago. Now, robots do all the tending. 1 guy can run 10 machines. Great for small shops in places like MT where labor is expensive and scarce. But awful for all the kids just leaving tech school.

Post grad school, I was invited to be a college faculty member, did 2.5 years in that field. State school, unique scheduling that was awesome. Over 50% of those students shouldn't have been there in the first place much less passed through programs, the sad part is most of them wouldn't have made it through trade school either. The trades use more advanced math and reasoning than your average business student. So what do they go do? Someone has to be the trashman, janitor, or line cook.

One of the goals with this venture is to help empower people who don't even know where to start on their own rigs to be able to learn with their own tools at their own pace, and hopefully learn and feel accomplished fixing something.

You’re absolutely correct I see it in aviation also. I started out helping my dad on his truck and when I was 15 got a fixer up Toyota and learned how to do everything I could on that. Most of it was because I couldn’t afford to pay anyone to do the work but I’m thankful now that I learned how to wrench.

the world needs janitors and cooks also…they are valuable paths too take too. My grandfather made his way owning a janitorial business.

I appreciate your outlook on this and the reasons why you’ve decided to go down this path. It not only teaches a skill that can eventually turn into a career but a skill that can be used in every day life.

Absolutely, I think personal agency was one the things that got me through harder times in my life. And I think being able to accomplish things on your own is always an excellent mood/attitude booster.
