Had this Tacoma for a bit now. I really love the truck. Of course the auto trans gear hunting is unnerving and irritating. Up to a week ago, I never even considered trying the manual mode. If I was feeling fiesty, I would push ECT, and turn off traction control. But even then the launch was meh. So out of frustration on the drive home, I tried the manual mode. It turns out this mode is a hoot. You can use the "manual mode" to the extent of redlining in first and the fuel cut off kicking in. Now the shift points are, shall we say, slow. Just like in auto mode. Practice a bit with your timing, and it's a blast. Just remember to shift at least 1000 to 1200 rims for redline. Made love this motor even more. Boy this thing loves to rev.
Just thought I would share. I did search for this very topic, and only for threads for tunes and such, which I am not comfortable with.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
    Enjoy your girlie motor! JK

The 2GR can be quick. It's no wonder Toyota dropped it in the Sienna and my wife's 2007 RAV4.

Haha seriously - enjoy the ride. Not sure if you meant to post this in the 2g forum but the 3g trucks are great.

I keep mine in S3 ECT around town and S4 on backroads. It’s a lot of fun. It keeps the engine right where it starts to make some power. The sport modes and ECT give you a lot to mess with, and regular D is just fine. The transmission isn’t great that way, but it never really bothered me like it bothers some people. Great little truck!
