3rd Gen Storage - I need a better way

my sport double cab short bed is stock basically, I traded in a 5th gen 4runner to get this bad boy. the only thing I find that it is lacking is storage. in the 4 runner there were lots of places to store thigns like flat repair kit, air pump, just basic road trip stuff that's good to have just in case. but the only places the tacoma has is under the rear seat, and i usually have stuff piled in the backseat for work. its a pain to take all that out to flip the seats up.

i do have a hard trifold bed cover but i don't wnt to put anything back there and have it slide around. what's the solution you guys have found without spending $1500 for a bed draw system???

 

What about behind the seats?

How often do you need to plug your tires to make it a pain?

You could install an AOB system for airing up.

 

It's not just that, I keep rain gear, flashlights, knives, tools, extra chargers for phones and drones, jumper cables...etc.
I drive an hour one way to work very early in the morning, often times no one else on the roads so I want to be self sufficient for the most part. I had it all stuffed away in compartments of the 4runner but the tacoma is definitely lacking in that area.

 

Hmm interesting. Everything you have mentioned are pretty small.
What exactly is bothering you?
Or maybe paint a better picture because I can’t see a storage problem with those things.

 

OEM bed mat will prevent storage bins from sliding around. Rope around them and attached to the bed rails will prevent them from flopping around. I drive daily and on road trips like this all the time with my recovery gear and stuff. Cheap and simple.

 

Basically, your taco with a hardshell has only slight larger storage space with your 4runner with rear seats folded . I wonder why b you traded. Anyway, back to topic. A cargo net might help

Ok the first thing is to get a bed mat. Your stuff won’t slide around. You can buy one from your dealer for around $80.

Next we got cab racks. They range from $500 ish and up. Prinsu is popular. @upTOPoverland is a member here who decided to build his own and it took off from there. You can mount Plano cases and such to hold gear not used often.

Let’s move inside the cab.
@MESO has an overhead molle rack. Currently he is working on re releasing so sign up for emails because they’ll go quick. I’m sure there’s a thread here to follow as well.

There’s a couple companies that make center console molle panels. They mount on the driver and passenger side of the shifter. You can mount the smaller items there. Not gonna name the companies, but you can search it and they’ll pop up.

A member here made a behind the center console molle panel. If you mount stuff there and need access under or behind the rear seats, you’ll need to remove the items.

There’s also behind the rear seat molles. I think a member here made some as well, not sure if he’s it’s still in production though.

For storage in the bed, molle panels that run along the bed rails are available too. A few companies produce them.

I have a few of these products and they make organizing a lot easier.

 

There are these that attach to the sides of the bed and swing out. They're expensive af though for a plastic box and a bracket.

Bed mat is amazing. I ran without it got a month, my 74 lb jack took a chunk out of my bed. That composite is Hardy

 

Bed mat shouldn’t even be an option, should be standard. I got a load of river rock dumped on mine twice in my 1st Gen...the thing is crazy tough.

 

Get a bed mat and a milk crate. Problem solved. Nothing slides on a bed mat. Use the truck bed man. I don't carry all the crap you do but I do carry jumper cables to help people out if needed. I keep an empty milk crate under my cover on the mat next to the tailgate. Even empty it does not slide. Great for holding small things.

 

You would be surprised how many people never ever put anything in their bed.

 

You could try TacoJerry.com and a rampage jerry can storage container. Just make sure you have the clearance under your tonneau.

 

This was my question. What do you put under & behind your rear seats?

 

Plano storage cases are pretty cheap and come in a few sizes. That plus a bed mat to prevent sliding.

 

I put a UWS brand chest in mine, doesn't leave much bed space but all my stuff I carried before is on board

 

I too have rubber mat and totes works great cheap

 

Yea when I bought mine I threw all my crap in the back and it was sliding everywhere. I went back the next day and bought a bed mat. I've been doing the milk crate for several years, works really well.
