My question is. If the major complaints about this generation Tacoma are low end torque and the transmission which I believe will be fixed through software TSB or warranty work. Why is there no pressure on Toyota to continue with a supercharger which would fix the torque complaints? It would be a pretty wicked truck with a supercharger. All that torque through the RPM range.

They won't sell enough of them. Anything in any corporation is purely about money.

The tightening fuel economy standards imposed by CAFE 2025 are fundamentally changing the way auto manufactures are designing and building their car/truck engines. Sadly a parasitic low efficiencey roots blower has no place in this new automotive future. With Toyota's shift to Atkinson cycle technology it does not make sense to invest in more R&D for a dead technology. From here on out the new gasoline game is variable displacement and small displacement turbos.

You vote with the dollar, and you bought the truck anyway. Toyota will check that off as a sign of approval.

The torque curve isn't that much lower than the 4.0. Where we feel it's less is the high end is so much more. It's best not to look at this as a torquey truck engine but from the perspective of a car. If you want it to move you need to give it the revvs.

Regear if you want more power. The old 4.0 Supercharger wasn't that special, even with stock tires it still didnt feel fast out of the box.

Regear if you want more applied torque, but it does not give more power. While I agree that the 4.0 SC isn't the best it could be out of out of the box, after the SC and pulley upgrade, my truck will literally break the rear end free and drift it to the side lighting up the traction control if I hammer on it at freeway speeds when wet. And I'm on 32s. It is a game changer, though an expensive one. I've not seen any stock trucks complain about to much torque causing wheel spin and traction problems running oversized tires on the freeway.

Speaking with a source at a particular assembly plant powertrain department - you're going to see a turbo in a new Toyota before you'll see another supercharger.
That said, the turbo diesel engine from the Hilux may be making its way over to North America in a few years, if the project ever gets approved. There's your turbo And your torque.

There is a "Supercharger Light" on our trucks, its called the ETC button. Use it and enjoy a different engine!

    all tore up already
except it does nothing to the engine... and is only on automatics because its a transmission shift point feature. magnuson is close to if not already into production on their supercharger for the 3.5

supercharger and you need to run premium fuel as well.
    no thanks.
with the increasing fuel cost I'd rather not need to pay the extra 50-60 cents/L for premium.
If you need that much power...buy a fullsize
Tacoma has enough power for my needs.

    0.5 hp avg.

Now when in boost it uses more, but you are in boost alot less than you would think, its load dependent, not rpm alone, not throttle alone.... load.... i find it hard to believe anyone drives a DD at a high load all the time.... if they do, they need a V8 or diesel

If someone has the blower and suffers any dramatic mpg drop, its their fault, or the system is not working properly.

It would be cheaper for Toyota to stuff a 4.7L V8 into the Tacoma than do the R & D to certify a supercharger for the Tacoma.
I'm not holding my breath for a diesel. Its too much a premium and I hate diesels anyway.

Point taken. But this time the information was coming from North American R&D. It has a project code. Timeline is 2019-ish, if it gets the go-ahead, and everything is on time.
The original 4.7L made around 245 hp, but had decent torque and sounded fantastic with the right pipes. Someone work on a mod...

The whole point of Atkinson is to combust less fuel over a longer stroke. Boosting the air charge would defeat the gains of the Atkinson cycle portion of the engine management. A very small turbo could help with pumping losses, but the gains would be small. To really gain torque from the turbo, you must switch out of Atkinson mode, and the fuel economy will drop a small percentage. The truth is torque costs fuel economy. While to some that is OK, I think Toyota is forced to forgo some torque to meet the CAFE standards. Now... the aftermarket could certainly capitalize on this....
