I disagree. I've been shopping for a replacement for my '03 V8 4Runner, so I've test driven the 2016 4Runner Limited twice in the past couple weeks. And I really don't like the engine. It is at best adequate. Nothing more. It needs revs to get performance out of it, and it is very thrashy at revs. It is just unpleasant when you push it, and if you don't push it you don't get any performance. It is the single thing that is giving me pause.

If the 4Runner was available with GX 460 drivetrain (4.6l V8 and 6-speed), I would already have one in my driveway. I'm considering getting a GX 460, primarily because of the drivetrain.

This thread should had been titled "3rd Gen Taco V6 vs 2nd Gen Taco V6.

Conclusion would had been that the 1GR 4.0 wins and I could had saved all of you the trouble of debating over which engine is bigger and better.

Thats what opinions are for. Ive owned 3 2nd gen Tacomas with the V6, I also had a 4th gen V8 4runner, and have driven a brand new 5th gen 4runner. Of course the V8 was awesome! I wish Toyota offered the V8 in the Tacoma and then 5th gen 4runner. Dodge puts a hemi into its SUV's (Durrango and Grand Cherokees)
But the dual VVT-i V6 in the current 4runners is better than the older version 1GR in the Tacomas. Like others have said the 1GR is designed as a reliable and torque powerband V6. The updated version makes even better HP and torque, And I think it will prove to be better than the new 3.5L all around.

I agree...but I think unless they lighten up the 4Runner, it won't happen. The power in the 4 Runner is already marginal even with this motor. The 4 Runner is really heavier then the Taco and still gets within a mile or two per gallon.

The 4 runner steering wheel comes out more that the taco's or the tacos have the center console farther back that I can't drive and have my arm resting.

I'm not super familiar with toyota but similar situation, all VW were made in germany prior to the mk5 model (06+) after that they were made in mexico. The older ones were built way better than the newer ones.

Even if the specs etc are all the same as the ones built somewhere else the material being used might not be of equal quality. Just manufacturing alone could greatly change it. So I can see your point and agree.

    only replacement for displacement.

Man toyota just needs to bring back their best engine ever made. start producing the 2JZ again and slam that in a taco. whether it be the 2jz ge or gte. That engine is a beast and so rugged and durable. Not to mention if they add the GTE gets some nice power. Even the torque on it is kick ass.

I read a while back on one of the posts here that the 3.5L motor is being built in Japan for the 3rd Gen. Can anyone confirm that?

Yup and in past 20 years we know how other parts Made in US had worked out (a frame).
No surprise at how many problems are already there with 2016 in its first month on the market.

The 4runner is some 400 pounds heavier than the 3rd gen taco... can't forget that. If only the 4r optioned the 3UR...

Yeah same story. Back in 90's VW cars were incredible quality, than they started moving factories, and quality is as bad as it can get.

    Oh I missed that comment.
There is a recall on 2016 Tacoma, after a month being on the market. What were you saying about quality?

I know there is a big segment that would like to drag race Tacos with the 4.7 8 but Toyota 8s compared to the little turbos of Ford use a lot of gasoline. The longevity thing is the trade off but still, mileage is important. I just want the 4 Runner 4.0 with direct injection and no fuck'n Atkinson cycle.

300 lbs if comparing The Double Cab long box 4x4 (4355lbs) VS The 4runner (4655lbs)
The 5th gen 4runner does feel very rigid and solid. I guess the fully boxed frame contributes to some of the mass?
