We've been rocking the 2nd gen since 2005. While 2012 had some visual changes, it didn't offer a whole lot more than that. Assuming we survive this year's apocolypse in December, we might see a 3rd gen Tacoma sometime in 2013 or 2014. Truth be told, the 2nd gen Taco is still the best midsize truck out there with the Frontier coming in at a close second. Because of this, I don't blame Toyota for sticking with what's clearly working.

That being said, we're bound to see the 3rd gen come down the pipe fairly soon. I'm curious to hear what you WANT to see in the 3rd gen and what you think we'll actually GET.

600W instead of 400W bed power, as little emissions BS as possible (no air injection pump, bblah, blah...), and still a durable and reliable platform

Yeah, after reading all 7 pages of that other thread I've decided it has AIDS and would like to continue discussion in this one NOT in the 2nd Gen forum....it's safe here

From what I've gathered the biggest WANTS are the following...
    -Diesel
    -Better MPG
    -Tech updates
    -Optional front and rear lockers
    -Frame coating
    -Stronger manual tranny

But I think those requests will fall into the following updates. There will be a new engine more than likely but I don't think it will be a diesel. The possibility of a turbo model is there but it would be a smaller sized turbo. Normally I'd have said that a turbo engine would be a long shot and that they'd simply use the 4Runner or FJ 1GR but that hasn't happened in the last two model years when it would have been very simple to do so. I'm almost suspecting a larger change is in the works. I think better MPG will be included because if this update.

I'm thinking there will be more technology updates. The Entune was the first step but I think the next model will have more "features". Stuff like all of the window switches have auto roll down instead of just the drivers side. Heated mirrors maybe but heated seats more likely.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a more hardcore version of the Off-Road. Something similar to the Raptor. I thought the Raptor would be a total failure but I've seen a TON of those things running around so apparently they're actually selling fairly well. I wonder if Toyota will try and get in on the action. It makes more sense to have a desert runner type model of a midsize truck than a full size truck. It would be nice to see lockers too.

Very good topic :). I am thinking about buying a Tacoma but think a generation 3 might be on its way. I test drove a 2012 about 2 weeks ago and like it a lot. Currently driving a Honda passport 1999 :(.

Never thought I like a truck but its been so useful hauling the jet skis around, carry loads from Home Depot for projects at home, etc.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I wish they would widen the roof so the doors close under the roof instead of over the roof. That little feature on the 80's Nissan 720 that is clearly missing on my Taco pisses me off.images_3b7c160b5bd0f70dd4d7835d33e089d329bea8b5.jpg

I think we can use some airbag charges to accomplish that. I'm thinking we also label the oil and tranny drain plugs so idiots don't mix them up.

I'm hoping there will be more tie downs in the bed too. The pair at the rear is like a bad joke.

Hahaha, is there enough room on the tranny for that size font?

i don't think the 3rd gen truck is coming out anytime soon. prob 2015, since well, Tacoma models have lasted around 10 years each.
