3rd Gen Tacoma Driver’s Side Grab Handle - CURRENTLY IN PRODUCTION

Based on these photos, the airbag placement looks the same, so assuming:
1. That the airbags are in fact the same design;
2. The material is the same (confirmed in quoted post by OP);
3. The pillar cover design hasn't been reinforced in any way more than the passenger;

I would postulate that the airbag deployment would not be peoblematic, but testing is always ressuring.

I know I know, assumptions.

My hypothesis is that NHTSA found that when they performed the driver side 1/8th frontal impact that the crash dummies were hitting the handle so it was taken out close to production - i am further assuming this based in the fact that the mounting holes are the same on both sides

I’ve got a friend who works down in SoCal for Toyota R&D, mainly on the power train side of things testing platforms in the Mojave desert among other places. I asked him about the driver’s handle and the “safety” around adding it back in. He said he’s heard this from other from Tundra and Tacoma guys and the reason WAS PURELY COST EFFECTIVENESS as they reasoned that the steering wheel would assist ingress to the truck. They’ve heard so many complaints that it will likely come back. @KTJO 4x4 has a good product that fits the form originally intended for the truck.

 

Oh Boi! Now maybe we can start on the driver's side bed cubby? Hopefully Toyota's sort of getting the message that tried and true works... but you can't nickel and dime the thing down to an 80's Hilux.

 

I wanted to follow up on my post to add some additional data.

First, disclaimer: I am making no safety claims, I am not an automotive engineer, I've never seen or tested this product. Nothing said in this post or the above quoted post can be stood-in for actual crash testing.

With that out of the way, it looks like there is no airbag deployment from the A-pillar, only supports for the airbag. Not to say these are not important, but we're not dealing with interfering with an inflation system.

What appears to emanate from the A-pillar is a "tether" of sorts to keep the side curtain in place. It appears to simply slip out between the flexible plastic cover and the rubber gasket as the side curtain inflates which bends the cover outward.

I did talk at length with him about the cubby delete, and about more usable power ports in the bed. I do know a hybrid Tacoma is coming 2021

 

I figure the next time I 'have to' buy a truck, it's going to be the successor, grandchild, or offspring of either the Rivian or the CyberTruck. 10 years from now those guys are going to be what I need to pull my trailer.

Stupid Toyota people... at least have the option to buy the darn handle as an option/accessory, if they want more money.

 

They prolly bundle it up with a bunch of shit you don’t need like chrome wheels, cheap subwoofer or cast aluminum nerf bars. You will have to keep checking the junkyards constantly to see if any of them got salvaged. It will be a million years before you could get your hand on a used set because if you go to the dealer you might need to bring your first born.

While on the subject. The second gen cab is nearly identical was the third Gen. why couldn’t we buy the second gen driver side handle and see if it fits. Not that I would because the color is all off but it’s a possibility.

 

Soon we will be able to buy it, and trust me it'll be less expensive to buy it from @KTJO 4x4 then it would be from Toyota.
