The new towing standards are what caused the Forester tow rating to dip from 3000 to 1500. That's a massive decrease just from the adoption of a new spec.

    http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/f137/sae-j2807-503513/#/topics/503513

This is just a forum link but it's a rabbit hole to more sources.

Contrary to popular belief here there are stringent standards. No car automaker wants to get sued for massive damage caused by inaccurate specifications. Of course this goes against the agenda some people here are pushing......

Am I suggesting Tacoma should pull max capacity? Of course not, but I lean more towards driver error in accidents like these. Use common sense and if you don't have any slow the fuck down.

Edit: grammar/typos. Phones aren't meant for forum posts...

Why do people tow and then complain about poor mpg?

If you're referring to my comment, I'm just stating I'd hate to see what it's like to tow twice the weight of my trailer. Silly me for discussing on a discussion board

Slow. That's what its like. Slow and steady doesn't mean "dangerous." You just gotta know what you're pulling.

Re post # 58....Yup that is a Nash 22H. I have one. It's 22' + 3' of hitch length. About 5500Lbs rolling. Never pulled ours w my "grocery getter" '07 Tacoma ....oh ya it'a 4cylinder/5spd so obviously. Pull ours w a 3500 Cummin's (ya overkill I know) and you still know it's back there.....Son had an V6 DCLB 4WD pulling a 20' rolling down the road at 5000 lbs and every semi he met on a 2 lane would whip that light rear end around even w 15% plus wt on the hitch....He sold The Tacoma and bought a Tundra....huge towing improvement.... and like another poster said ...there is a big difference towing a 6000Lb high profile TT vs towing a 6000Lb low profile flatbed....

Did see anyone ask if the truck was wired for trailer brakes. I'm guessing not.

That's a good question. Many cars have the requirement of trailer brakes over a certain weight, even if that weight falls below the max tow spec. Of course all we can do is speculate. Sometimes shit just happens :/

I do not tow much except our 16' Scout Sportfish and as life would have things a 16' Aliner Scout camper--neither really susceptible to side winds. However I have on my bike been hit by some nasty "good thing shit sticks to vinyl" side winds that made me wonder whether I was going to be able to keep the round rubber things on the bottom.

A Tacoma--with a 24 ft. 4300 lb empty trailer (that's as much as the truck weighs)--it could happen and I cannot say with any certainty I would end up any differently than the poor slob in the news report...

Can the third GEN tow 6500 lbs, sure. Would I ever feel comfortable doing it, hell no. I've towed 6500 lbs behind my F150 with a V8 many of times and even with that there was a few times where I was in situations that had the pucker factor on high. Biggest thing when trailering is weight distribution, brakes, speed and keep your head on a swivel.

I agree, while a "tow-package" equipped Taco may be rated for towing 6500 lbs. only a fool would do it over any distance at highway speeds. That's a ton+ more than the truck weighs, and a classic "tail-wagging-the-dog" situation waiting to happen...

I understand, could be. I have not studied it that closely, to what particular element do you refer and what would be the motive?

Tow big or go home bro. Probably wouldn't of happened if he had a 4-Banger.
