Guess I got lucky with my 2019.
Maybe it was fine from the factory, or maybe the previous owner had it tuned. Don’t really know. It shifts fine, no issues at all. Since it’s a known issue, I actually paid close attention when I test drove it, and drove it a long way from 30 mph streets, to 80 on the interstate before I bought it. I’m happy with mine.
    I have owned a 1987, 1994, 2004, 2010, 2017, now a 2019.
The 2017 was a different story. I sold it quick. Had all kinds of vibration issues at different speeds, and nobody could figure it out.

I have the KDMax tune and can confirm this. I’ve had it for probably 20K miles now. It’s amazing, makes it feel like a totally different truck. I highly recommend it, I’ve never once regretted spending the money.

Don’t know. I am ignorant when it comes to the tuning everyone talks about. Is there a way to find out if it has been done?
I know it seems like it has more power than the 2017. My wife even noticed when she drove it.

My 18 is perfectly fine. No tune or anything else. Drove it normal for first 1500, to 2000 miles in learning stage. 26k on it now. No complaints. 3rd Tacoma I've owned. More eradic drive now, that's what it's going to learn.

Not sure about the shudder you’re talking about, if you know someone who has a third gen drive theirs to make sure you don’t have a problem other than the typical shifting complaint here.

ECT should help if it’s the normal shifting back and forth problem.
S mode also can stop it, drop it in S5 or S4 if needed for the times it’s shifting unnecessarily.

I was also annoyed at the 40-65 mph, trying to climb a hill and the engine was laboring. Then I started driving it like I hated it and the trans eventually seemed to "learn" my driving style and it's not so bad now. Just get used to poking the gas pedal hard and it might get better. My experience was compounded by my other vehicle...... a 485 hp Chrysler Hemi. You tickle the gas and that car is going 100+ mph. I just had to adjust my driving style. I still love my truck, as much as some things annoy me, it's still a Toyota.
NOTE: If you do some off road or boat ramp stuff, the lazy feeling throttle is actually an asset.

I believe the new Frontier has some funky transmission shifting issues going on as well. I was recently (rather reluctantly) considering a new Frontier but with that, pure direct injection and a plethora of other bugs (mostly ECU or otherwise software-based IIRC) I decided not to go that route...for now, anyway.

Going to keep driving my '06 2.7L for a while longer. My main concern is that I don't want to find myself absolutely NEEDING a new truck pronto, and being into the early years of the 4th gen Taco. I got pretty lucky with my '06 being 2 years into 2nd gen (no major mechanical issues in 17 years) but 2016/17 had the tranny problems. No telling what bugs the 4th gen will have first couple years :(
