Toyota will probably solve this issue on the Fourth Generation by going to a CVT. Then I will blow my brains out.............

Even Subaru has (I heard at least) changed their CVT to have a REAL first gear for take-off, then the rubber-band takes over.

The factory tune is 100% intentional and works fine for most. Totally understand where many don’t like it as it’s clear that for some it hits a real nerve.

The dealer won’t be able to tune your prior expectations or driving habits, so if you’re reading these posts & considering a purchase, take a long test drive around town and on the highway.

If you own it and it’s making you crazy, you’re in luck b/c the truck is currently #2 in KBB resale. It will not offend anyone if you check out the competition & be sure to share your experience.

I am not part of the complaining crowd. I could have (maybe) repaired my Corolla, but I wanted a truck for off-road (I am in Arizona) that even my ignorance found to be highly recommended. I saw the window sticker and knew my "easy to get" mpg would drop from 30. Pick your poison.

It’s definitely not driver habit. For whatever reason some of these trucks run fine and others don’t.

My 2021 OR was a complete POS on the factory tune. KDmax came out with their 1st tune when I was at 1,800 miles. In that time there had been no “learning”. The thing was crap and I’d resorted to manually shifting my AT truck, what a joke. Driving into a wind at freeway speeds was miserable. With a 10mph headwind it would have a hard time holding 5th gear (6th was useless),with a 15mph headwind I’d just give up and go the 4th gear.

The initial KDmax 6.0 tune transformed my truck but it wasn’t perfect by any means. Since then I’ve flashed every one of their updates and noticed significant improvement with each one. Currently I’m running a customized version of 9.0 and am amazed at how well the truck runs and shifts. Constant Speed Cruise Control could still be improved but otherwise the tune is about perfect now.

Try having the dealer, if you trust them to actually do it, clear learned values. It will wipe the learned memory in the ecu. Basically after restarting and driving it will be as if the transmission hasn’t learned anything yet. And since it’s no longer new drive it the way you drive all the time until it learns your driving style all over again. In other words don’t drive it like it’s new and on break in time.

Friend has a taco and went this route and it fixed a lot of his shifting issues.

I think it should adjust to a new driver over a period of time.

If you do all highway around 65 mph, you'll see that after 150 mile trip.

Can verify that. Traveling 800 plus miles I kept it around 65 to 70. On the flats hit 24 plus. At the end with mountains and hills I was at 23.3. And that was figured by miles on the odometer and gas in tank at fill ups removing 8 percent for variations in when the clicker turned the pump off.
In Wyoming where speed limit is 80 and I did 80 it dropped significantly to around 17.3 at lowest and 18.9 at highest.
Sixty five to 70 is definitely mpg area.

My Corolla, weighed down with my first installment of moved possessions, when driving 80 as a test in deep-West I-20 Texas saw a plummeting MPG. That experiment stopped fast and 70 became the speed.

wish I could say the same friend, I drive this one as normal as one would, I don’t floor it to get to 50mph nor does it take me 5mins to get there, all I want is to be able to drive at a steady speed wether 40mph or 60 without it feeling like the engines missing out, not really asking much out of a $43k truck

Yea agreed, tacoma holds its value.Im going to give it some time, if in 8months or so I’m still unhappy it’s either a tune or it’s gone. “If” I decide on the competition I will inform, thanks

Why do these "i hate my automatic transmission " threads always evolve into tune commercials? One has to wonder.
