3rd Gen Transmission Fluid level Check

Had it checked. They said they added approx 1 quart

 

Anybody without the tow package find that thier tranny was low?

 

Yes it has been mentioned by a couple members .
Assuming all transmission cooling systems were empty when the truck was assembled

I have this, too. And no, I don't think (at least for me) the amount of fluid matters. Happened to me yesterday after the fluid was topped off. Seems to happen most for me when it's warm outside but the truck is cold...

 

This is the best I can come up with for engine lugging so far
TORQUE CONVERTER SHUDDERS / engine lugging - this is what most people think it is
Reports are coming in that your 2016 truck has the same identical problems that we are all too familiar with in the 2nd gen . The 2015 automatic transmission was a 5 speed auto . Yours is a 6 speed . Same company makes both and they function exactly the same . With this said , every problem that's popped up over the years with the 5 speed will be common to the new 6 speed

Step 1/ Check your transmission fluid and verify it is filled properly .

Step 2/ Road test for the shudder after checking the fluid . You can verify the shudder by gently tapping the brake pedal . You are not actually hitting the brake , you are manipulating the brake switch which will turn the converter lock up clutch on and off .

Step3 if you still have the shudder after you verified the trans fluid level , disconnect the battery posts( 20 minutes ) which will clear the memory and re-teach your transmission how to shift only this time be more aggressive on the gas pedal .

Step 4/ If this doesn't fix the shudder , wait until Toyota releases the flash or drive in ECT mode . These are your only options as of now .

Thanks for the information. I've got an appt. tomorrow morning to have the transmission fluid checked so I'll start with that and see how it goes from there.

Will do. I'm definitely going to put up a bigger fight than they will, fortunately the shuddering I'm experiencing is fairly easy to reproduce.

Mainly had the model, I did notice a delay sometimes mostly on cold cold mornings and just thought it was the nature of this new Taco (my 5th gen 4R did too it seemed). Didn't bother me, but after seeing all the reports of low fluid bothered me and wanted it to have what is spec. For what it's worth, it does seem smoother...

 

Trd OR they said it was a quart low. I was experiencing issues mostly when cold and weirdness between 5th and 6th. It already feels better but it could be placebo effect I guess lol.

 

Man, this looks like another deep denial deal from Toyota. A quart low on a new tranny is unacceptable.

 

Hope someone at Toyota can figure this out... Appears pretty straight forward one or both assembly lines are under filling the auto transmissions for some reason. Clearly it is not easy for an average consumer to check their own fluid anymore... Not even easy for the dealers to check anymore... pass a memo to Mike Sweers.

 

I had my fluid checked and the dealer found it to be 1/2 - 3/4 qt low. I am still having the delay from R to D. I don't know if I trust the dealer if they actually checked and filled the transmission. I think I am going to check it my self this weekend. I have read Gear's pdf and other than some WS fluid and the pump is there anything special I need or tips I should know?

 

mind pointing to which dongle and which app? I have a scantool mx and I don't believe the trans temp is correct, its exactly the same as coolant temp, doesn't make sense.

 

^App is just Torque Pro for Android https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.prowl.torque&hl=en . You do have to add the trans temp as a custom parameter, however, and the details are different between what I use for my 2nd gen and your 3rd gen.

what's the custom parameter? And side topic question, have you had the "check abs system message" pop up if you leave the unit in and then start the truck?

 

^I don't get the the ABS light on my 2nd gen. I could in theory drive around with the dongle plugged in continuously.

 

It just occurred to me, a leveling lift might affect the fluid check; especially if you did it in on a sloped driveway.
I'm stock suspension and did it in the garage, fwiw.
