I would stick to the procedure just so all you guys are on the same page .
Some have tried an infra red thermometer
Some have tried adding a quart and letting some fluid drain out .
Are the cheats close to following the procedure ?
The procedure to get the transmission into temp mode is " NOT " too difficult .
It was designed this way to prevent technicians from getting burnt from hot trans fluid . We already know of one Toyota tech who was splashed with hot transmission fluid for not following the procedure . I would hate to see or hear about a member of this forum getting burnt .

It is to verify fluid is in the correct range, but without knowing what the fluid temp is, you'll have no way of knowing the expansion rate of the fluid. It slightly overflows the straw above the check plug at that temp, verifying that the level is ok. Above the range too much fluid will overflow the straw. Too little and it won't overflow at all.

The jumper should be pulled after entering check mode. The reason for this is the engine is in a "fast idle" mode when the jumper is in place. Removing the jumper lets the engine return to normal idle. The transmission fluid level should be checked at normal idle.

I've been working on GM trans for years. They also have a check plug and need to be in a temp range. But no jumpers and lights to worry about.

Probably just going to add 1/2qt and call it good. I'm not as anal as most people in this thread.

Not true, once the computer is put in the "trans temp monitoring mode" it stays there until the vehicle is restarted. As soon as it's in that mode and you see the "D" illuminate for 2 seconds then turn off you remove the jumper wire.

Clunk into low is normal on any modern 4wd truck I've driven. Ford, GM, Dodge, Toyota, etc.

Pan temp. will lag. External temp won't be accurate.

True - read page 6 of the Toyota procedures. If you don't remove the jumper after it's in temp check mode then idle fluctuations can impact the level. I've posted a copy before, but here it is again.
