3rd Gen V6 Loud Ticking Noise (not Vac Pump T-SB-0316-17!) Actual Issue TBD

Ah, gotcha. I know mine does a little ticking when it’s doing the cleaning cycle thing or whatever, but it’s not that pronounced. Hope your dealer diagnoses and fixes quick!

 

The noise is pretty loud...doesn't sound normal to me. I don't have anything even close to that coming from the engine in my truck.

 

So I went to dealer this morning. Truck wasn't making the sound there but I played them the clip. First they tried to send me away saying "its the "air" pump and that it's normal. I pressed them and asked them to get another truck and show me the same noise. They seemed uninterested in taking the time or going through the hassle of doing that and said they would go check if there were any bulletins then came back and claimed it's the vacuum pump and theres a TSB for it. The tech played me a sound clip that Toyota has on file that sounded like what I have going on. T-SB-0316-17 . And they said it's safe to drive in the meantime. Dealer ordered the parts and is going to call when they arrive to schedule the replacement. I will report back afterwards as to whether the new vacuum pump resolves the issue. After searching this "vacuum pump" issue with the TSB number I saw another thread here on TW discussing the same issue. I attached the TSB sheet for anyone interested.

Little update: Took the truck in for the scheduled vac pump replacement and got a rental. Was supposed to pick up the next day but dealer called later that evening and said that they got the truck to make the noise and it became apparent that its not the vac pump and that it's something internal and advised me that they will need to pull the motor and begin taking it apart to figure out what's wrong AND that it could take as long as a month to get the truck back. It's fully covered under warranty and they gave me an SR5 tacoma loaner to drive around in the meantime. Bummer but it is what it is. Still don't know much so just waiting until things develop. Say a prayer for the truck.

 

Oh no!! My truck has this exact noise and just as loud.
When does the powertrain warranty run out on these trucks??

I thought the ORs didn't have the vacuum pump?

 

Very interested in what the dealership finds. OP said it would be a month (from July 14) at the shop, so we have a few weeks to wait.

taking mine in next Tuesday for the same thing,2016 TRD OFF ROAD 4x4 but I have extended warranty so hope all goes well (59000 miles)

 

I just got word that the motor is out and they're trying to diagnose. Will update Friday when I hear back.

same here. dealer has been vague in every way so really looking forward to hearing something concrete about the issue and the timeline.

 

Mine makes a similar noise when cold, i’m taking her in come winter time.

So I took my truck in to my local mechanic and after checking everything noise related they came up empty handed. Belts and pulleys were all good, no engine knocking, ac normal and was one of the 'noise' makers. They did state that the secondary noise is the lifters and an additive to my next oil change might help with that said noise.
I will be doing that in a couple of weeks as my 5k oil change is coming up.

 

@smogged.out any update on this issue. Curious what the issue was.

 

dealership called me on friday and said they identified a “displaced” piston ring and that there was no other issue or damage. supposed to get the truck back tomorrow or wednesday. when i pick it up i’m going to make sure to speak with the tech and see if they can give me any more info. and i’ll update with what i learn and if the issue is resolved.
