Mine ticks at idle but no metal-on-metal tapping sound thank God. Hopefully they fixed it.

    That's interesting.
I'm no mechanic but I'm having trouble visualizing what they meant by that.. if a ring is out of it's groove (how does that happen without land/ring damage), or did they mean it spun around and the gap was lined up with other rings?
In any case, still in for the results.

I have a 17 Taco that has made that noise for as long as Ive had the truck.... Usually does it when its hot and idling... I know what the injection cleaning cycles sound like... sounds like sweat shop making bootleg Sean John (sewing machines)... This legit sounds like rod knock at times... Meh, I've changed my oil every 5k since i have owned the truck... If this slut decided to give up the ghost, it isn't because i wasn't good to her :bananadead:

My diagnosis would have started by removing the oil pressure switch and checking the actual oil pressure with a mechanical gauge to confirm correct oil pressure. Sounds like upper engine noise from excessive valve clearance. Possible lifter, not thinking camshaft since noise seems to come and go at idle.. Lower end (piston/ring), don't think so.

i’m calling BS on the whole thing. DO NOT GO TO TOYOTA OF DTLA. most recent update is that they had the motor back together and dropped it into the truck and it “wasn’t running right” and that the “valve timing was off” and that they were going to pull it again. i’ve filed a complaint with Toyota corporate and waiting for a case manager to call me back on monday. they’ve also been giving me the “understaffed because of covid” bologna. i’m pissed. and the service manager who i am now speaking with wouldn’t tell me when i would get the truck back. he said all he could do was check in with me tuesday. so that’s where i’m at.

here’s the latest. they’ve had my truck for a month now. i got a call last week that the truck would be ready to pick up on saturday. motor was back in and they were going to test drive it and make sure it was dialed. then i got a call later that same day and was told that it was “running really bad” and that the motor would need to be pulled for the third time. i’m pushing toyota corporate to help things get resolved and have requested that they just give me a new motor especially considering the techs working on it clearly aren’t competent. the service manager at the dealership has been good though and even agreed to do my trans, transfer case and front and rear diff service for free. so now i’m waiting to hear back next week by wednesday. i have platinum warranty to 90k miles already but discussed having that extended as well. so we’ll see.

Heard it on a 2016 I had for a short time a few weeks ago before I got the new 2020.

    Didn't think it sounded normal.

Bro. Hell no “normal” I have a circle of friends we all have 3rd gen Tacoma and nobody is ticking or knocking that damn loud. Now I buy into the cleaning mode if it comes and goes like in the vid but that sounds really freakin loud compared to what mine sounds like and my friends

Mine sometimes sound the same like in video. I have diagnosed it that if your rev it to 1k rpm the noise goes away. So i think maybe toyota just set the rpm at idle too low. Mine is around 500-600 rpm at idle.

totally. i’m going to talk to toyota corp tomorrow about where we’re at and having the truck towed to another dealership. maybe where i bought it (ventura toyota, kind of a ways from my downtown LA home) if anyone has a recommendation for a southern california dealer that is top notch i’d love to hear it.
