Exactly, and I got a Tacoma because they're rumored to go 400-500K miles or more if taken care of. I fully plan on making that happen.

The absolute earliest we will hear much or even see anything about a 4th gen would be in 2024 I would bet. They’ll run the update they did in 2020 for about 4 years. They did the same thing in 2012-2015.

I'm gonna drive this until Toyota makes my electric one. Hopefully
200-300k would be a little more realistic.

I see you drive a 21. What's the longest you've kept a vehicle? A lot of people say they're going to "drive it until the wheels fall off." Very few of them do.

    I'm guilty, too.

I think it's going to be the transmission that limits the life of the 3rd gen. It's shit. And Toyota doesn't offer a manual in reasonable enough numbers/trims to compensate for it. And at some point when it goes out it won't be worth repairing.

Other than shifting like it's supposed to... what makes it shit? I've yet to hear of a transmission failure on these trucks.

I can't wait for the gen 4, because then a lot of the idiots in the 3rd gen section will trade up for the new new and get outa here :p

We've still got our `97 Civic that we bought brand new. Other than having to install a new compressor it's still running great, though I do have a power steering pump out in the garage waiting for me to install it.

I hope you're wrong but I fear you might be right. I totally would have got a manual if it was available in my SR5 trim.

Um, no. For the body, the only change was sheet metal. For the inside, no dimensions changed, only surfaces. Wheelbase length and width the same. Engine changed, driveline didn't. @Jeff Lange is correct, the changes are mostly cosmetic with a different engine.

Agree completely. It was essentially a new coat of paint. Effectively no new engineering or tooling. They "changed" the engine, but it is far from "new".

I mean, I'm not just making stuff up. It's a slightly updated version of the same cab - with the same fender aprons, rad support, same floor, same roof - and not even all of the exterior body panels are new (the rear doors are the exact same part number in fact), same box with new outer panels, reinforced version of the same frame, same suspension, same rear interior trim panels, same pedals, same front diff, same front axles, same knuckles, same tie rods, same steering, same hubs, same wheel bearings, same brakes. They kept the same overall dimensions (and not just major things like the wheelbase either, I mean like the measurement from this bolt hole to that bolt hole down to the tenth of a mm). The 2.7L engine is mostly unchanged, as is the 5-speed manual transmission, it even uses the exact same exhaust, front to back. They didn't even change the chassis code, TRN245/TRN265. Internal documents from the time referred to it as an MMC, or mid model change, and not a FMC, or full model change.

Essentially, they took the existing Tacoma and updated the sheet metal and lighting, as well as the interior forward of the B-pillar, then swapped out the engine, transmission, and rear axle for newer equipment, and mounted it onto the same frame with some stronger steel and bracing. It is exactly what Toyota did for the Tundra in 2014 with the exception of the powertrain updates.

Typically when there is a new generation of a vehicle, I wouldn't expect to be able to grab doors, a roof rack, window glass, interior trim panels, suspension, brakes, etc. from the last generation.

It's not just a typical mid model change either, it was pretty extensive. Similar to the 2014 Tundra I mentioned, the 2013 Avalon, 2015 Camry, and the 2013 LS and 2021 IS on the Lexus side.

In Toyota land, if you're using the same chassis code and can swap stuff like glass and body panels, you're probably not dealing with a new generation. You can argue consumer and marketing definitions all you want, but it's just how it is, and it's not like I have no experience in the area either.

I heard the next get you can pick between free oils changes for the first 2 years or free strippers and cocaine for the first 6 months.

4th gen may be an underpowered whale because it will share its platform with the Tundra (which is why the next-gen Tundra has tiny tires on 6-lug wheels).

Dont expect to see a 4th gen until atleast 25’ 26’. They are going to use this brand new engine for as long as they can.

Like you guys, I feel like we only have 12 years before this planet explodes from fracking done by the USA. Wait what were we talking about? Let's take off our tin foil hats and get back to reality.

There has been none. The power of the Farce is strong in this thread. Opining on non existent generations yet to come, false comments on transmissions.

    Evening all,

I have seen a bit of info here and there about the upcoming ‘24. Nothing definitive.

I just got my ‘21 last November. I leased it cheap as a second car. I fell in love with it and am now going to refi it since I already modded the heck out of it. It only has 900 miles so far.

    https://youtu.be/v21jck-NpgQ

Heads up, it is the predator with the TRD pro with 265/70R16. I am swapping next weekend for a new set up with 285’s and will be selling the TRD set with 900 miles as is ready to bolt on if any one interested in NC, Charlotte area. Pics in my build thread.
