Sorry, but it's nonsense how many of these threads get hijacked by complainers and "tit for tatters".

The way I see it, pretty much every topic on here has been talked about to death at some point.

So I kind of see each thread started as an attempt to begin a conversation with people who are here NOW, not in some thread begun last year or whenever. A conversation that satisfies not just the question the thread is based on, but maybe the need to just reach out and get to talking to someone on a mutually appreciative level.

And then someone comes along and basically tells that person to take his worthless talk elsewhere, that no one wants to hear it again.

    You get me?

    It's rude.

    LOL! Now THAT'S funny!

A guy who jumps in to someone else's thread to tell them how "disappointed" he is (and thus encourages all the other whiners to jump on the OP) calls me out as rude!

You must be a riot at parties!

"Hi guys, just wanted to come over and tell you the conversation you're now having? Yeah, well, you should go talk to those guys over there, they just had this conversation a minute ago so you're wasting your breath!"

    +++++++

Break, and now you've got me hijacking this poor guy's thread. Just PM me if you want to continue this.

I don’t mean to beat my ideas to death, I was hoping to hear other relevant ideas as to what improvements would be welcomed in the next generation Tacoma.
However with that being said I really need to set you straight regarding DCT and DI, again.
Dual or twin clutch transmission: Obviously you don’t know much about dual clutch automatic transmissions. The one correct statement you made regarding DCTs is that they do provide extremely quick shifting, but that’s just an added bonus for the Tacoma. The main advantage of a dual clutch transmission for the Tacoma is near seamless power transfer (very little torque interruption), thus higher efficiency (higher mpg). A dual clutch transmission is configured very similar to a manual transmission however it’s like having two manual transmissions in one gear box. Instead of having a clutch pedal, electrical controls and hydraulics do the shifting. DCT’s have one clutch for the odd gears and one clutch for the even gears.
Why would the tow rating decrease with a dual clutch transmission? Please explain with factual examples.

Direct Injection: Yes Toyota could add direct injection to the current 4.0 and that would boost BOTH hp AND torque while increasing mpg ever so slightly. I’m satisfied with the current 4.0 V6 performance (hp and torque)in the Tacoma, however it could stand to improve fuel efficiency. Torque is very important in a truck, however the same torque output in the current Tacoma 4.0 V6 can be achieved with a smaller displacement direct injection dual VVT-I V6.
I’ll use examples to prove my point:

Direct injection: Cadillac’s 3.6 liter V6 without DI produces 258hp and 252lb-ft of torque. The same engine with DI produces 300hp and 270lb-ft. (displacement stayed the same however torque went up, where’s your only larger displacement equals more torque theory here?)

Dual VVT-I: Toyota’s 4.0 V6 with single VVT-I (current Tacoma) 236hp and 266lb-ft of torque. Toyota’s 4.0 V6 with Dual VVT-I (current 4Runner) produces 270hp and 278lb-ft of torque. (again where’s your theory that only larger displacement produces more torque?)
Torque is not a just a function of displacement when comparing internal combustion engines. Having both dual VVT-I and direct injection in a smaller displacement V6 could achieve similar performance with much improved mpg.
If you have rebuttals to my claims this time, please provide proof with examples.
    Thank you.

Dual clutch transmissions can improve fuel economy by as much as 10% (from Ford and VW). Bosch for example claims direct injection can improve fuel economy by 15%. Dual VVT-I seems to increase fuel economy by ~5% (with increased hp and torque) on Toyota models. I’ll be conservative and say by combining these three technologies the Tacoma would increase efficiency by 25% without sacrificing performance. That would push the combined mpg rating from 16/20 to ~20/25. That sounds pretty good to me!
Yes it would cost money to develop the technologies into the next generation Tacoma, but it’s feasible. The 4.0 V6 is also used in vehicles other than the Tacoma, the 4Runner, FJ Cruiser and Tundra. So Toyota could leverage volume to justify the R&D. Plus these changes would help Toyota meet CAFE.
What do other people on this site think of this proposal?

Adopting the DI technology is a good idea into the next gen of Tacomas. It improves overall driveability and efficency in one neat package. Serviceabilty on the user/owner end of the fuel system is a question as you are dealing with extremely high pressures but so far the reliability of these systems has been good.

As for the gearbox. A twin disc manumatic would not work well for truck duties. The loads and stresses on the wet disc clutch and the mainshaft would not adapt to truck platforms. In a truck drivetrain there are two solutions. Manual traditional or automatic with proven track records, i.e. Allison automatics. My .02.

If the access cab rear door 'pockets' count as two, then there are four in the rear doors...two at the back end of the console...two in each front door...two beneath the radio stack...and one behind the (auto) shifter.

Yep...thirteen. I wonder if someone at Toyota was tired of Consumer Reports bitching about how some utility or high performance vehicle didn't have enough cupholders, and decided to load 'em up. NOT ENOUGH? HERE, THREE CUPHOLDERS FOR EACH FREAKING PERSON! STILL NOT ENOUGH? FINE, HERE'S AN EXTRA!

You know according to a Cadillac commercial, cup holders are the number one selling point for women. AHAHAHAHAHAH...

I would like to see a more fuel efficient engine, but for now I'm happy with my taco the way it is. (ok that's a lie, i need bigger tires and the list of my mods done to be happy lol)

IMO the answer to fuel economy and power is not with some fancy dual clutch..... it would be for toyota to put a small 3-4L turbo diesel it the tacoma, this truck would get over 40mpg on the road and be able to pull a small house, and there is the fact that diesels are just badass.

    Anyone agree?

NY Auto Show starts today, and the first two days are the press preview days. Hopefully we will hear something about an update to the Tacoma.

I've lost a lot of enthusiasm for a 3rd gen in 2011, however I’m still hoping they at least update the engines to dual VVT-I. According to another post it looks like we will have the option for a 4x4 regular and access cab Tacoma with the 4 banger for 2011.
