PickupTruck.com posted today that Toyota is working on the next gen Tundra which is scheduled to be launched by 2014. The current gen. Tundra was released as a 2007 model, so approximately a 7 yr product life.

...so can one conclude that the Tacoma is on a similar product life cycle? If so then 2012 sounds like the year to me. My fingers are crossed.

Ecoboost is a fairly advanced engine system design. They manage 10:1 compression, forced induction, and direct injection.

They're not breaking laws of physics, they're just applying good design theory to modern engine design. I have no reason to doubt the ballpark figures about the ecoboost engine in the F150.

And if it's tuned more for highway driving than load hauling duty...so what? A lot of people get a truck for daily driving and /occasional/ light hauling. If an F150 was available at a comparable price to the Tacoma when I was shopping, and had a 2mpg and many horsepower advantage, I would probably have gone with the Ford.

Fuel economy is going to be a big issue, and it's going to pummel Toyota if you can get full-sized domestic trucks that beat the snot out of Toyota's mid-sized trucks in fuel economy.

I want a Bugatti Veyron-derived quad turbo W16 with 8 radiators. Can Toyota do that while still keeping price to a minimum? I'd be up for that!

Good article, but the nomenclature for pickups really needs to change.

Referring to the current gen of fullsizers as "half-tons" is fucking hilarious. My Taco is a half-ton. It's actually more than a half-ton, and some configurations are close to 3/4-ton. Current full size pickups are 1-tons, and duallies reach into the 2.5 ton arena with payloads over 5000lbs.

Just a nice example of how trucks have become ridiculously overbloated in the past 30 years to match the American waistline.

If you want direct injection, torque and fuel economy get a diesel toys conversion. Simple and easy. Time to quit re-engineering the wheel and use whats been given.

Direct injection is only good when the gasoline they sell us isn't shit like in the U.S. You really think that putting gas from one of those middle of nowhere gas stations in the U.S into your Direct Injected engine is good?

do you think that gas comes from anywhere different than the gas in the middle of a large city? it doesn't. there are very few refineries around that produce all the gas - the formulas are just a bit different.

sigh::::I would like to see a more sleek, redesign. The boxy look is getting tired. The Frontier truck is a nice design. Why can't Toyota do something like that? The Hilux has a good design as well.
