Got the trans out today. Will replace the pipe tomorrow and then reassemble. If you do it at home, make sure you have a helper!

What a PITA job… though not sure how you could do this from the top.

After I found out the leak and denied warranty by the dealer, and quoted $2300 for the repair. I decided to do it myself and bought the by-pass tube from the dealer for $126.45 after tax. I also called Toyota headquarters trying to get it covered, but someone called me back after couple days, stated Toyota have to rely on the dealerships' decisions on the warranty. That was back in April.

Anyhow, couple weeks ago, 4 months after I was told to pound sand, someone from Toyota called me to follow up on my case. I told them I have repaired the water by-pass and Toyota can kiss my ass. She said what she can do is to reimburse me the cost of the part. I emailed her the receipt and moved on.

Today, I got the check from Toyota.

Toyota knows they fuckd up by using plastic for the bypass pipe in order to save $.000010
They learned that lesson eons ago with other engines like 2tr-fe....dunno why they'd roll the dice again...shameful

They do from the top by completely removing the cab. Hint the 13 hour labor.

I think I'd just hose it down with brake cleaner and smear it over with Marine-tex. Probably make a heck of a mess but, way easier then the change out. This is kinda of like changing the oil filter/cooler housing on the Jeep 3.6l. I had to take the intake manifold off to get to it since it's UNDER the intake! This is probably accessible by pulling the intake same as the Jeep looks like.

slide in under the passenger front tire, look up and forward. You'll see the right side of the bypass, which seems to be the side that starts leaking. Can't miss it. I check mine every oil change, almost at 90k miles and its dry as a bone.

The by-pass is straight above of the bell housing, between 11 and 1 O'clock. Lay on your back, under the front passenger door, look up through the gap between the catalytic converter and the bell housing, use a flashlight.

Not under any pressure, that would be hydrostatic testing.

The method I used was NDT(Non-Destructive Test), it uses fluid to indicate physical inconsistency in materials, such as stress fracture, crack, etc.

My 19 with 100k miles w/original coolant was fine (pulled motor, blew it), new motor I just got has 24k miles and the bypass looks fine (shiets still brand new)

I thought Toyota switched the bypass pipe to metal? Replacing mine at a dealership as we speak. Haggled for a discount arguing it to be a design flaw.

Hi folks. Long time lurker finally joined. I have a 2016 Tacoma TRd Off-Road DCLB that has been a fantastic vehicle. Around 145k miles. Starting to see the seepage from this flange on right side but no noticeable coolant loss. Is this more of an annoyance seepage or is this thing going to blow wide open? I’ve heard some have had the issue for quite some time.
