I'm also wondering of the life expectancy of the 3rd Gen, as in when the 4th gen is coming. 3rd Gen has been a complete and utter bomb.

I never would have guessed someone could outdo how to make a POS truck better than Dodge.

Jeep straight six FTMFW. Except for high-end power....good god they suck on the freeway. That motor is a pig past 50mph. Also, @Threerun - the rear main is actually super easy to replace. Most annoying part of the whole job is getting the oil pan back in and lined up.

Now the front main on the other hand...that fucker is a royal pain in the dick. Had to remove radiator, then the damn harmonic balancer was stuck like a motherfucker (like excalibur stuck).

I treat my truck like I treat my granddad's axe. Been in the family three generations and we've only had to replace the handle twice and the head once.

I currently have 102333 miles on my 2016 Tacoma TRD off road without any issues. I do maintenance religiously though every 5k miles. The dealer thinks it should easily get 500k plus without issues.

Oil change every 5k miles. Also do all the required maintenance. Just flushed and changed transmission, rear diff and transfer case.

I expect mine to last the life of the loan/warranty (obviously with regular PM/TLC). After that, it's off to power town (supercharger, fuel/ecu etc...) so it'll be a roll of the dice... but fun as hell!

Edit: Just broke 500 miles yesterday and no problems yet! LOL

I mean its techinically an engine from a lexus, so I dont see why it wouldnt last. Just let Toyota iron out new model quirks. But I mean i have a 2.7 so I already know its gonna last a very long time lol:D

I drive across country a few times a year from Oregon to Ohio. Was thinking about trading it in for a Ford Transit 250 van to build into a camper. Love the Tacoma though just worried about the high miles. The dealer mechanics said it should last to over 500k the way I maintain it.

I'm 58 and I'm going to see if my 2017 outlasts me.
I do take good care of it.
At 10000 miles a year Ill be 78 at 200000 miles.
Not sure I would take any bets on me.

Don’t know. Me love you long time? 10 years and 190k on my FJ. I expect this one to do at least that. It’ll have an easier life.

I realize this is an old thread, just bumping it to see if there are any updates on how many miles and what issues people are getting with the 3.5

For the guy who asked if anyone actually got 600,000 kms (roughly 360k miles) on a truck. I sold a 95 with 350,000 miles on the 22re, was starting to use oil noticeably (about a quart every thousand miles) but still ran good. I have another 22re sitting in the shop that never used a drop of oil at 280,000 with I totalled the truck it was in for the third time and didn't fix it (first time was my fault as teenager, second time was also mine, hunting and hit a rock about the size of a fridge driving down a road so brushy I failed to see it at 5 mph, third time I was rearended on the freeway by some idiot weaving through traffic and rolled it down the freeway at 65 mph). I've got a 2000 with a 3.4 sitting here right now with 395,000 miles on it that I am looking to replace (why I'm checking on longevity of the new motors) I've never touched the motor or tranny on it, completely replaced the suspension twice (weak point in toyotas) tie rod ends, ball joints, etc. but the only thing I've done to the drivetrain is replace front cv axles (napa rebuilds are as cheap as replacing boots and lifetime warranty, which is good because they certainly aren't as good as the originals). I hate the auto tranny in this truck and will never own another automatic, but mechanically it is sound, I've done nothing but replace fluid in it, just despise driving it and it really sucks in the snow. I maintain my trucks well, but I'm a hunting guide for a living, and anything I've owned for the last fifteen years spends most of its time with a fourwheeler or snowmobile trailer behind it and over half the miles off the blacktop. I never thought I'd see a motor more reliable than the 22re but I believe the 3.4 has it beat, and my dad has a 2.7 in an 05 with 375,000 miles on it, it is using quite a bit of oil but he hasn't had to do anything to the motor yet. Just hoping Toyota keeps it up.
