3rd switch search

I hunt and there are times I wish I had just footwell lights. The less visible light to set the better. I have rock lights added to outside of roof rack so I get get dressed in the woods when I arrive under green leds. It's just a small feature I'd like to have.

 

I just got back from taking care of some medical stuff and my mind is all washed right now. I need to sit down after a bit and really go through all this bc I definitely do want this footwell light and switch to happen.

 

Couldn't you just run them switchless to your dome light wiring, then you just flip the dome light switch to turn them on with the doors, on all the time, or off all the time. Or are you dead set on keeping them separated?

This is the initial switch I bought for this project. I believe this should work. I just need to find out the correct wiring diagram for it to work as I'm hoping. On(auto on with any door) ; Off ; On (manually on by itself, not tied into dome light manual on)

 

3 wires only? I'm confused now. Footwell lights are only red and black. If black goes to middle of switch, red goes to the pink 15?

So only one wire sent to the overhead console. Easy peasy.

 

One last thing..... This switch has a blue backlight when in either "on" position. Will that come on with this setup or do I need to add anything or will that screw everything up?

 

That will be a problem you should avoid.

 

A 3 way switch with independent switch illumination should be the proper choice. Or one without any illumination.

 

Typically the 3 position switches have indicators for both “on” sides when they are on, and no illumination for the switch itself.

so when you have it on “door” mode and open the doors, power would run through that switch to enable the footwell lights and as such, the door side of the switch’s “on” position would be illuminated.

 

There are many 3 way switches with independent illumination. Finding one you like and that fits is another thing.
