This thread might be a good place to start. It doesn't get useful until page 4 though.

fwiw, I'm looking to do the same thing into my 05 Prerunner.

From the limited research I've done, the ideal 3rd gen Tacoma steering for our truck is a 12-13 unit. Anything newer requires wiring changes vs plug-n-play.

    Good luck!

Model years 2012-2013 are Gen 2 trucks. Sometimes described as Gen 2.5. Gen 3 started with model year 2016.

Ahhhh, good to know. Thanks for the correction.
In my case, I just want to add steering wheel controls. If I can get a slightly updated design and something new to stare at, all the better.

I believe you need a new clock spring. Go with a 2015 controls. Basically the same as 3rd gen. The clock spring on 2012-2013 is the same. Depending what radio you may need to tap a couple wires. There are a few thread about swapping in 2.5 in 2 gen Tacomas. I swapped the 2015 controls into my 2013 but did not need to update the clock spring. But focusing on the 2.5 swap will prob help narrow down rather than 3rd gen.
