    Hi folks,

I'm just about to pull the trigger on a new tacoma and I've had a couple dealerships offer me a 'free' third year of maintenance (supposedly valued at $700) for free. I've asked what extra worked need to be done on the third year of a 3rd gen. tacoma without anything solid.

Can someone take a look in their owners manual and see if they're offering anything more than a oil / air filter change / tire rotation, that would be helpful.

Anyone else about to buy may want to ask about it.

If it’s free who cares? Even if it’s just an oil change it’s still nice. That said, I’d just ask the dealership.

If it includes all items for a 30k service and you think you will have that many miles, it's worth it. It will all depend on how many miles you drive.

    What a load of BS!
For less than $700 I do all plus more the right way with better fluids.
One item I may have problems with is "inspect wiper blades". Will see dealer for that.

It is b.s. to charge that much for services. Just saying if he uses his truck to need that stuff and it's free, then why not?

    So stock.
I’d pass on the maintenance and ask for an additional $700 off...

In Hawaii this inspection apparently costs $1,600...

It was total dealer BS and nothing was itemized and broken out.

How hard is diff oil to change out?

Yes, this was my thought exactly. Why I wanted to see if it covered anything more than lube, oil, & filter change.

The "year" part is total BS and deceiving. They say "years" when they sell you the truck and after you go in it becomes "miles". My 3 year maintenance lasted 1.5 years due to high mileage. I feel much better now doing my own maintenance.

Without getting into the "it's free" vs it's just a discount vs "do it yourself", at 25K miles I prepaid for an additional 20K miles scheduled maintenance for $250. This is a Toyota plan, good at any dealership in the US, and also included roadside assistance. I believe the Toyota list price is around $300. It covers only the scheduled maintenance, none of the dealer scams (IMHO) that jack up costs, like "fuel system cleaning" and "oil conditioning". It's still mostly tire rotations and oil/filter changes, plus floormat checks, but is a much better deal. So have them throw in the Toyota plan.
EDIT: it's also good for 2 or 3 more years, so it's not just 3rd year coverage but 3rd and 4th.
EDIT #2: here's a description (not my dealer). Looks like retail is now $329 but my dealer was happy to offer me the lower price any time up to the actual 30K service appointment, which is when I paid.

Actually if you read closely they only check the driver's side. The time and expense to also check the passenger side is just too much!
