3rz Cam timing

    Hey TW,

    I have some concerns with my cams and timing of my 95.5 3rz. I was adjusting valve clearance and I had an issue with getting the engine to TDC. This was because the dots on my cam gears were not lining up. It seemed like they were a tooth off every time I rotated the engine. With the engine being at TDC from the notch on the outside the exhaust cam seemed like it was behind and the intake cam seemed like it was in the correct spot. My questions is can I just take off my exhaust cam and put it back on one tooth higher to get the dots lined up then make sure all the clearances are to spec? Or does it need to be completely re-timed. If there is a thread that already discussed this please send me the link.


    Attached is a picture at TDC of the cam gears

    Also, the truck is running fine. Has slight hesitation when it cranks but other than that it is running great and info is greatly appreciated.

    The timing chain is only attached to the intake cam so you can probably just remove the distributor and take out the exhaust cam to retime the valve train. How long has it been running out of time? Being that you said it is running fine otherwise I would assume the timing chain is correctly installed it was just the exhaust cam that wasn't.

    I've been driving it for two years and in the last 6 months it has been hesitating when it was cranking. I noticed it was out of time last week when I took the valve cover off and adjusted the valves. The guy I bought it from said the truck's top end was rebuilt so whoever rebuilt it could have not put the exhaust cam back correctly.
