3RZ-FE replace timing components during head gasket change?

    Hey all,

    Replacing the head gasket on my 1998 2.7L tacoma (3RZ-FE). Taking the opportunity to do some other work while I'm in there. My timing chain/tensioner/guides look fine as far as I can tell - and from what I understand these parts are meant to be "life-time".

    I don't want to go through the process of removing the timing cover to replace as I work pretty slowly. However, if its recommended to replace these parts (I'm at 270k) then I'll do it. Does anybody have experience here they could share?

    Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
    Tough call the head is off !

    Me I would do the timing chain while every thing is all apart.

    My luck runs I would be pulling it apart in a month or 2 if not sooner.

    Like all decisions it will always be your call.

    Like said previously, it's just your call on the risk/reward ratio.

    Risk: Have to take it all apart again soon.

    Reward: Save a few hundred dollars (spitball guess #) in timing chain components parts cost, and a couple hours labor right now.

    Good luck either way!

    Yeah I ended up spending 600 bucks at the machine shop for a valve rebuild so at this point I'm feeling pretty committed and will be replacing timing components (plus oil pump o-rings/seal while I'm at it)... Hope to have her back on the road soon

    I think you'll find if oil was changed regularly, those components will be just like brandnew...

    maybe the tensioner may be a little sticky.......

    so its a flip of a coin.....


    If it was me I'd replace all that stuff....with the exception of the balance shaft chain....
    and even that, I'd get a new tensioner.


    One thing you may have to consider is getting a seal saver for the front oil seal...
    might want to inspect that shaft carefully and pester the mechanic......
    270K mi is a lot of miles on that shaft and seals.
