I blew a head gasket in my 99 2.7 4wd tacoma and while I got it apart I want to change the timing chain since it has 260k. I have the head off and power steering pump off as well. Was hoping someone has done it before and could give some advice on whether i have to drop the pan and take off the ac compresser and water pump or if there are any secrets to it.

The water pump can be left alone. AC compressor can be unbolted and laid aside.

Being able to tell you if it is possible to remove the timing cover is a tough call because this requires attention to detail. In theory I suppose you could remove the timing cover PROVIDED that you maintain the integrity of the seal between the oil pan and the timing cover. Problem is that you would have to pull somewhat straight out. You can work around that and protect the gasket if you are careful and use a thin scraper to separate the timing cover from the oil pan gasket. I think your big question lies with the fact if the chain has enough room to come off the sprocket. Looking at my engine that I have apart and it looks to have the room to remove the chain from the sprocket. Is it possible? yes. Is it difficult? could very well be so be prepared for it if you do it.

On the positive side if you happen to remove the engine you can do things like a balance shaft delete. I did it on the cheap by removing the balance shafts, removing and rotating the balance shaft seals to stop the oil flow to the former balance shafts.

Thanks. What is the advantage of a balance shaft delete?

Hey did you ever get it done? I'm in the middle of doing it and had a question about the timing marks

Ok thanks for the reply. Did you happen to delete balance shafts?
