Mine was running great when it sprung a catastrophic oil leak, between the timing chain cover and the block, at 327,000.

I’ve got a very manageable leak (less than 1/2 quart between changes) here. Did you remedy it or call it when it happened?

I had the engine rebuilt. I've got about 19K miles on the new motor and now the manual trans is starting make noise and the front CV Axles need to be replaced.. I just might call it quits now, but still deciding....

Problem is that I really don't like any of the new "midsize" pick ups as they are the same size as a "full size" was in 1998 when I got my truck.. but I've got 345,000 miles on it now...everything is bound to go sometime!

I'd say rebuilding to keep it going strong indef would be a better investment than a new truck, if you want to stay in an old one. They don't make em like they used to. New trucks will eventually fail too and need the same or more expensive work. Of course, I'm not speaking on authority, just my opinion.

    That is insane haha

I'd like to get somewhere in the 250 to 300 range. But it'll probably be a while before I get around to it.

94,750. Runs like a Swiss watch. Occasionally get some vibrations at stop lights but that’s about it. If I get ambitious one day I will clean the IAC and see if it makes a difference but it runs so darn good now I won’t mess with it.

Edit: Garage kept Florida truck its whole life so no rust, original frame and no fading of original paint.

My current 2002 had a very rough life before I got it. Must not have had any kind of regular oil changes as the original engine sounded like a jar full of marbles when i bought it. Still made it to 175k before I pulled that engine and put a junkyard engine in. This engine probably has about the same number of miles (unknown) but runs great! I have always loved the 4 cyl 5 speed combo in little Toyota trucks. Had a 1984 22r, 1987 22re, 1994 22re, and 2003 5vz auto before the current truck.

My dads 98 is running strong at 350k + he drives it all the time to work. I'm afraid the rust will be the death of it. Not much left in the rear and the shock and left spring mounts.

Where is yours leaking? There’s a few spots on these engines that are notorious for oil leaks that are a simple O-ring replacement to fix, such as the oil filter to block connection and oil pump cover. Had to do both of those on mine.

I’m almost 100% certain it’s the timing chain cover. I’ve replaced the filter housing gasket with no change and it seems higher than the cooler. Valve cover gasket is also new and not leaking. Seems to be from that cover, it’s very manageable and doesn’t leave even a drop on the ground just coats the engine over time.

My in laws had a ‘99 pre-runner with a bad leak. Had to top off with a quart once a month. About 160k. They sold it several months ago.

if it’s towards the bottom front of the engine, I wouldn’t rule out oil pump cover. It’s right behind the balancer and mine covered the whole bottom half of the engine in oil. I replaced the front crank seal and balancer 2-3 times thinking it was that before I finally bought a die kit and seen the die glowing at the oil pump seam. Got another buddy with a 3rz that also has the same leak.
