My 1998 tacoma has a rare engine, so i've read and researched. The 3RZ-N73. I am looking to swap the engine for a new one because this one isn't doing so great. It has 220,000 on it so i decided its time. My only concern is the coil packs. The packs on my engine are on the left side down where before was a distributor on earlier models. I have never seen any other engine like this. Everything i have found with the coil types are individual packs on top of each cylinder. Does anyone have any information or experience with the N73?

Every single 3rz from 97-98 to 00 had twin coil packs.... On the RIGHT, or passsanger side if the head.

The 3rz that was in my truck was just like yours. Nothing special, or rare.

how does the wiring work with the dual coil packs vs the individual coil packs? if i get an engine with the individual coil packs on top will the wiring match up to my truck that originally had the dual coil packs? Im just a little lost with the differences and how easy an engine swap will be for me or if i am going to run into stupid little problems that i wont be able to figure out.

The engines with coil on plug (01-04 I believe) will be similar, but not the same. You will need to check and see if the coil packs will mount on the side of the head. Also, the 01-04 2/3rz engines have 4 port intakes, and the 95-00 have 8 port intakes.

My 3RZ looks just like yours. Doesn't have the tag on the valve cover anymore. Fell off awhile back

All you have to do is swap your cool packs onto the engine with the individual one's. Your wiring harnes will only work for your coil packs. I'm guessing your looking into JDM engine?

yes i am looking into a JDM engine. I don't have a lot of experience and am learning as i go. So what you are saying is that i will just need to take the coil on plug off of the new engine, Then take the twin coil packs from the old and mount onto the new?

Yep. Your pretty much going to swap everything that's on your engine to the jdm engine. You'll notice there a lot different. The power steering pump is on the opposite side the EGR tube is different the dip stick is in a different spot. Your basically only going to use the engine as a long block only even the valve covers are different.
