What's up yall. I'm about to pull this 3rz tranny and slap in a new clutch. My question is about the rear main seal. Who makes it. I just ordered a timken. Anyone had any luck with those or should I even replace it if it's not leaking

Timken tends to be decent quality.
I guess it depends on the mileage and if you have any other leaks?

Typically, if you have, or have had, other leaks at other seals, it’s a good idea to replace the hard to get ones while you are in there. But…….if you’ve never had any leaks, and the seal looks good, you might consider leaving it alone.

It’s a coin toss. My luck sucks.
It would probably leak either way:frusty:
And probably not long after I did the job.

Can't help on the brand, but on keeper vehicles I *usually* replace everything I touch going in or out for a repair. Including things normally hidden, like the rear main in this case.

Of course it can depend on other circumstances as well.

Like @TnShooter, if I don't do that, too often I pay a short time later.

Yeah, my knowledge and expertise says to “replace it”.
My luck says, “It leaks either way”……..errrrrrrr:annoyed:

I left the old one in a 87 22r and it's still holding up. I guess I'll figure on it when I can see it's condition. Really would like to know who manufactured the original. I'd hate to replace it with a not so good one

Also on the replacement itself. Many guys said they leaked bad AFTER all the work. Maybe they got impatient and installed it incorrectly or they put a timken in lol. Anything special about install?

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Mine was not leaking no doubt if I changed it then it would leak. I also have the worst luck.

About 100,000 miles so far so good.:amen::fingerscrossed::fingerscrossed:

In this case how many also would change the front seal in the transmission as well?

Just go with OEM, and replace the pilot bearing while you’re in there.
