Hi, I had my engine rebuild around 1300 miles ago. The engine had worn bearings and one rod was slightly bent. At the same time they also changed the pistons, rings, timing chain and guide, water and oil pump etc. The engine started to make a strange tick/knock around 200 miles ago and I assumed it was because they might have used poor quality oil. So I changed the oil to 5w-30 mobil 1 and put in an original Toyota oil filter but it didn't make any difference. It makes the noise after the car has sat overnight and then I turn it on in the morning. It will tick/knock for around 6-8 seconds and then stop. Is the noise piston slap or maybe a bad valve?

You can hear the noise from around the 6 to the 11 second mark.

if anyone has any ideas of what it could be please let me know! Thank you!

Oh and also it's a 3rz with a carb from factory so that's why it has a mechanical fuel pump.

Mine does it in very very cold Temps for a half a second. Has for years at 300k miles. I mean, I can't even get around to the hood and look before it's gone. I've been assuming piston slap but as I've ordered a new engine from yota1 I'm driving it retarded hard bc I just don't worry anymore. With yours tho, on a fresh rebuild I would Def try to figure it out. It's probably something stupid. Hopefully they used s genuine timing set. Maybe your dealing with those stupid balance shafts making noise in that case it isn't really anything other than a noise issue

Yeah there a lot of pulley's, belts, fan clutch action in the front there...

my A/c clutch has been noisy when warming up for a minute or two until the bearing warms up..
    going on about 3yrs now......

got a bunch of links/vids on how to replace that....but so far so good...when it gets cold, its really noticeable...

I bought one of those e- stethoscopes off amozon for $37....couple years back...

that and a little smoke machine, I think all the seniors should have here..

these heads are paper thin....just a fact....you're always goin be tripping over valve train and cam noise...

think thats bad ....go listen to a 22r engine from 80's ...early 90's....

If your engine was old....I might even would suspect the chain tensioner....they can stick when worn/clogged until the oil heats up..

I doubt its piston slap.....and surely they checked/adjusted the valve clearances...

wouldnt hurt to bora-scope and look at the cylinder walls.....but really its too late...
is what it is......I'd just drive it ....till it dont....

even with a little scarring on the cylinder,....and have decent compression...it still could run for hundreds of K's....

on mine the solenoid in the vsv vapor valve makes more noise than the engine...clicking on/off...
replaced it with a new one....and its even louder than the first......
