Had a timing chain failure on my 2.7l 3rz and was just looking for some input before I reassemble. Casted into the cover is a tab that broke off when I had my timing chain fail. I’m 50/50 right now on getting a replacement cover but was just curious what y’all thought? My guess is it just protects the sensor from junk getting tossed off the chain? I will be replacing the sensor since it was damaged in the failure. CAAF1076-9F7D-4404-BCD1-1CEE34233CCE.jpgB01699A4-AA55-42E2-A5EF-1AB0AFAD6F53.jpg Thanks in advance!

Just really wondering if y’all would run it and not worry too much or for sure replace it? I already found the chunk missing and removed it too fyi. Just don’t want to get another if I don’t have too. Thanks!

I don’t see why not. I don’t think it’s a guid for the chain, up to you. When I rebuilt my engine I replaced everything that had me second guessing, if it was good or not. Didn’t want to do it a second time.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
Was that tab breaking off the cause of the chain failure??

If not what was the cause?

My luck I would not replace the cover would crack in a few weeks.

    look for a used one.

    Good luck!

How many miles on the truck before the timing chain failed?

The place I've seen these crack is right around the the crankshaft opening...
round hairline crack......so check around that real close....

But that's usually from a wobbling harmonic balancer on its death throws.....

Ended up just replacing the cover since it was only $75. Not worth it to not do it and have in the back of my mind. Trucks back up and going now and I feel good about about not risking it. Yay.

Did you get the aisin one? When I replaced my timing cover got aisin from Rockauto and it had “Toyota” poorly scratched out was pretty happy with that.

I was looking at that one and almost pulled the trigger on it but the $200 price tag was a tuff one to swallow for me. I ended up getting one second hand from toyautomart up in Sacramento. Great bunch of dudes and they always have good prices and service on everything I need. I do like the aisin products with Toyota scratched off though! Used about 5 of the water pumps over the years and they are great!
