Hey everyone. I am going to do the timing chain on my 1995 Tacoma with the 3rz and I’ve got a few questions for more knowledgeable people. I was wondering what gaskets I need to do the job. I know I need a valve cover gasket, timing cover gasket and a tube of fipg. Has anyone done this job without pulling the head? Would you recommend or is it worth pulling? I was looking at the timing chain kits from lc engineering has anyone tried them before? Definitely the biggest job I’ve took on so any general timing chain advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

    LC Engineering is good stuff.
I haven’t personally done a chain on a 3rz, but I can not think of any reason why you would need to pull the head.

I don’t think head has to come off
But a link another member sent me says to RR T chain….see head removal section
I will PM you the Toy Manual link….

If head doesn’t need to come off
    Thermostat gasket
    EGR gasket
Oil pan gasket (or use RTV like everyone does nowadays)
Crank shaft gasket (or RR oil pump that comes with pressed in gasket)
Water pump gasket (or RR pump that comes with gasket)
Distributor O-ring….guess not ness. but mine was leaking badly

You know these timing chains are suppose to last 300 /400K without any problems...

The 2 chains dont wear out....its the guides that show age after 300k....

The 2 tensioners can become gummed up over time.

The 2RZ and 3RZ 4 cylinders have very low resistance on the timing system.....
you get a crappy low powered engine......that can last forever...

No pull head....that makes no sense at all...
just have to get those two top bolts by pulling valve cover...

The big PIA is dropping that pan.....and thats only because of the stupid fipg crap...

I would never use the fipg....the new silicone gaskets are the bomb...
just need to use adhesive on one side so you get a perfect seat, without crimps or flips...

when you put back together ....put a dab of rtv anywhere there is a triple junction...
    head/block/cover...

    A firm on head

was different Toyota engine, 22R(?), and friend RR’d T chain with out RI head

    agreed about fipg
I used the cork gasket ($4 RA close out)
Old mech showed me his trick……
Spray 3M adhesive on one side of gasket
As not to Hulk It when trying to attach oil pan to block on your back
    Worked perfectly

To clear things up a bit I chipped the sprocket on my crankshaft for the timing chain so I need to get in there to replace it and figured I might aswell do the whole chain and tensioners. Not a job I am doing just as preventative maintenance.
