Blew my 3rz in my 99 4x4 manual extended cab tacoma after hydrolocking it. It chucked a rod through the side, I'm wondering if the 2rz is direct bolt in and if not what needs to be done to run a 2rz.

I did that exact thing.....the ultimate way to do the balance shaft delete....

but mines an auto.....that almost cant get out of its own way...
mines a light weight work truck...so that's okay for me...

If I had a 4x4 I would think twice about that.......unless it just a pure commuter vehicle...

I would check into a reman 3rz without the balance shafts....that alone will add even another 8 hp...
straight tube headers .....maybe another 4 or 5 hp...

other than that everything on the two engines are exactly the same....even the timing cover...
only difference I know the oil pump gear is different for some weird reason...
and the oil pans are different too...
    I've even used a 2rz ecm on a 3rz.....and a 3rz ecm on a 2rz....without a single hitch.....but that was an automatic trans ecm's....

If you go into Lc engineering and yota1...you'll see 99% of the parts are interchangeable...

If you want to do it right....these guys have the best warranty in the world.....
    upgradable to 7 yrs/ 1 million miles...

they're not cheap......but much safer than a Jdm, or a salvage special....

Myself I bought a reman 2rz block with a two yr warranty for $800 from out of california.....and a new design new head out of texas for $699....with a 3yr wty...

but all the bits to put it together double the price.....not including the $1400 labor to put it together and install it......and well 3 cases of corona gold....

I forgot the oil canister bracket is different on the two engines...

I was sweatin to find one to fit the new 2rz.......3 yrs back I found the only one in America...
for $60 out of a salvage in Huston....

and then nobody in the US had that U bolt to attach it to the block...
that had to be ems from Japan.....bolt was $14......and ems was $34...

90401-19005 Bolt, Union(For Oil Filter Bracket) Toyota

and then the washer/oring kit to attach all that was another $25 w/ship from yota1...

Basically another 2 month delay to get everything to get it back together on the road.......

Ohh , and another case of corona, and another $100 tip to the mech to dick with all that extra...

    What a PIA....

    that was 17K ago..

    Nope.....$100 ebay ones...

And I figured I might as well get the JC whitney matching cat.....
and the direct tacoma replacement walker mid pipe, and walker muff and tail pipe from advance......20% off coupon...

for the icing on the cake.......

some things ....you dont want to go back.......

that mechanic only charged me a $100 to weld all that in extra..
when they were putting the engine in....

    hell of a deal...

they cut the flanges and straight welded everything.....
so none of that donut leak shit between the pipe flanges will ever plague me.....
and they tack welded that slip pipe that goes into the muffler......so all that cat water doesnt build up in the muffler...

these guys really knew their stuff..
took em less than an hour...

I ended giving them an extra $100 tip when all that made its first 1K...shocked their shit...
I even gave em extension/ swivel magnetic spark plug socket for making it past that xmas...

    Ho Ho Ho....
