‘04 Tacoma 3rz 4x4 manual. Has 2” body lift with fox shocks that give it an extra 2” lift as well. 4.30 gears with 33x12.50x15 tires.

I want to get more power under the hood as the truck struggles up hill and pulling a trailer is certainly a struggle. I’m thinking of swapping the engine for a 5vz. I know the motor mounts are different but anyone else know what other issues I’ll run into? Can the w59 handle the v6? I’m not thinking of adding a supercharger and I figure the 4.30 gears will help out too.

That’s a lot of work for a little gain

if you’re going to go through the trouble make it worth it

I’m thinking my next best option is a Cummins r2.8. But the engine alone is $8k.

where as the swap to 5vz might be $2k?

you will also have to swap transmissions and maybe even driveshafts. also, don't forget radiator and ECU.

If you’re just looking for 5vz power I’d boost your 2.7, they’d be about the same.

lots of information on 3.4 swaps have you searched ??

they can all be a little different depends on where your strengths are some people hate the wiring .

the cost depends on what work you need to outsource .

I have only used The R150F or R151F in my swaps I am not sure if the W89 has the same splines or even bolts up to the engine .

or if you could get away with using the 3.4 bell housing on the W59 and the 4 cylinder clutch

What if I find the engine and transmission already paired up?

    Stock again- rip slug
will need new engine mounts, ecu, etc.

IF youre looking for more power, go turbo. Especially on a 4 cyl, supercharger doesnt do much on them from what people say like @BartMaster1234

That is always a good option if it is possible drag the complete vehicle home what you don`t want or need you can sell or scrap

Engine Harness and The ECM the whole vehicle also gives you the cab harness 4th ECM plug.

Would a 4Runner make a good donor vehicle? I’m sure they didn’t make those manual transmission

What are the difficulties in converting it to auto transmission?

You would need the Auto Engine Harness and ECM never doing that I only can go by what I read

Pretty sure you can't use the 4cyl trans with the 5vz, or at least you wouldn't want to...find a R150F to mate to it

I have a supercharged 3RZ behind an automatic. It’s awful and expensive. It’ll be much more noticeable behind a manual however.

    And behind a 5VZ you’ll be wanting an R150F, not a W59.

If you want simple power just do a turbo. So much easier than an engine swap.
