I have been researching a bit and can't seem to find a good answer to this. I want to run 305/70r16 because wide, but I want the gearing to correct to minimize the negative effects of this the best possible. It seems that 4.10's would provide quite close to the stock ratio with 32.85" tires. Some threads seem to say this is as easy as changing the ring and pinion front and rear, some say that this is not possible to fit these gears in the front differential? I think some people said that you would need to get a front differential assembly off of a 4 cyl model? Any clarification or a link to a thread I didn't find?

    Thanks guys...

FYI front diff clamshells on all 2nd gen tacos are the same regardless of 4cyl or 6. Only difference is the ratio... 4 bangers get 4.10's 6cyl get 3.73's

That stated if you are going to regear may as well do 4.56's That will help push the much heavier tire better. Buddy just changed to 4.56's in his 6 cyl tacoma (trd off road) and he runs 285/75R16's with tons of armor and its much better now.

I don't want the high revs on the highway because our fuel economy goes down at about 2500 rpm which is right about 85. I would like to maintain an efficency cruise speed of atleast 80. eventually I plan to supercharge to compinate too so I think for my eventual plans the 4.10 set makes the most sense. Good to know the difference us the same so I should be able to just swap parts. you know how much these parts are at the dealer?

I'm trying to plan because I'm gonna need the tires, gears, cab mount chop, and I wanna put in a torsen at the same time if I'm taking the rear apart.

My thought is that if I get them used out of a wrecked 4 cyl perhaps I can send them somewhere to be shot peened and surfaced or something and ultimately end up with a nicer gear than the OEM ones at about the same cost?

    Makes sense I'm thinking?

If you're looking for wide without going big, just pop in to the Hawaii thread. They'll set you straight. No need for a regear then.

if you are going to do it, do it right. Unless you can find a low mile 4 banger 4x4 that can easily have the ring n pinions pulled then maybe. Also that will only work if you are a NON TRD OR.

That's what I'm saying, is take the gears somewhere to shot peened and isototrpicly superfinished. There are companies that can finish gears a lot nicer than what Toyota does. I have a TRD sport. Will gears from a 4 cyl model still work?

    I did 4.56's on my 33's with a 2015 V6 Auto. Huge difference.

Technically speaking, 4.10 puts you closer to factory RPMs and gear ratios with 33" tires.

With 4.56's I do about 2,600-2,700RPM at 75MPH. So yes it does impact fuel economy a bit. That being said, it's about the same as I was with 3.73's on 33" tires (because it had to work so hard).

I've got steel bumpers, steel skids, steel sliders, etc. So heavy as well.

If you're doing gears you might consider lockers at the same time... same labor, just higher parts costs.

    I went to ECGS!

yes they will but i mean why buy used ones if you can get aftermarket new ones for probably the same price.

Also the 4.56 debate vs 4.10's is auto vs manual transmission... the 6 spd manual doesnt have as much of an OD gear compared to the 5 speed auto. a 4.56 on the auto is similar to the 4.10 on the manual for cruising rpms.

that stated i still vote 4.56...

Not trying to thredjack, but on topic....I just put on 33" tires (KO2 34s but they measure 33") and I'm feeling the loss in power on the highway big time so I'll likely be regearing (and getting a TrueTrac) in the future. My TRD Sport is an automatic. Prior to this point I had 31.5" tires and got around 17mpg average. I suspect I'll be down to about 15mpg now.

This might be a stupid question but is there anything between 4.10 and 4.56 gears? Since I'm an automatic with the longer OD gear I should probably just go 4.10 and be done with it but if there's something in between that would be ideal.

There is a ~4.30 (somewhere around there). OEM and not cheap.

    Certain FJ's also had a ~3.90:1

I went ahead and ordered a 3rd member and clam shell from East Coast Gear supply with 4.10's and a true track. I'll make a post when it's all in.
